About the Item

Portrait of a blonde girl with blindfold in uniform holding a machine gun. PREISS FINE ARTS is one of the world’s leading galleries for fine art photography representing the most famous contemporary artists. Helnwein is one of the most renowned yet also most controversial artists in the world. Recurring motifs in Helnwein's process of artistic creation are violence, pain, and injury. These are illustrated, for example, by his self-portraits with a bandaged head and wide-open mouth. The artist confronts taboo and emotional topics in recent history - National Socialism. Born in Vienna, Helnwein studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, choosing to implement a broad range of techniques into his oeuvre. Along with watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting, photography has become one of his most important media. For me, art is a weapon with which I can hit back. Helnweins art knows no taboos. His works touch the viewer deeply, possibly even going so far as to evoke disgust. In any case, the observer will not be left cold. William Burroughs, also photographed by Helnwein, once said that the American revolution began with books and music. It would be possible to add the fine arts to that list. Helnwein?s art could indeed have the inherent capacity to initiate change by penetrating the shroud of political correctness and reconquering the art of innate primitive actions. Solo-Exhibitions: Albertina, Wien 2013; Museo Nacional de San Carlos, Mexico City, 2012; Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento 2011; Friedman Benda Gallery, N.Y.; Modernism, San Francisco 2009; Galerie Rudolfinum, Prague 2008; Lentos Museum, Linz, 2006; Ludwig Galerie Schloss Oberhausen, 2005; Palace of Legion of Honor, San Francisco, 2004; Museum of Tolerance, Los Angeles, 2003; Robert Sandelson Gallery, London, 2000; Wäinö Altonen Museum, Turku, Finnland, 1998; State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, 1997 and many more.

Artists whose work he shot include Max Beckmann, Francis Bacon, Chaim Soutine, Allan Kaprow, Clyfford Still, Georges Braque, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Picasso, Auguste Rodin, Georges Rouault. He worked with Louis H. Dreyer, the pre-eminent architecture photographer in New York City. Chaim Jacob Lipchitz, 1891-1973, was born in Lithuania and came of age in Paris during the early 20th century, where he was active in the avante-garde community of Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Diego Rivera, Chaim Soutine, and Juan Gris. Art historian H. H. Arnason, who ranked Lipchitz with Picasso and Marc Chagall, wrote, "Lipchitz, as a pure sculptor, is ...unquestionably one of the greatest sculptors of this century." The architect Philip Johnson asked Lipchitz to make a wall sculpture to be placed on the brick chimney over a fireplace of a guest house owned by Mrs. John D. Rockefeller III on West 53rd Street in New York. Lipchitz decided to develop the piece from his Pegasus designs and call it Birth of the Muses in honor of the Rockefellers' interest in the arts. In 1950 he completed the work as a bronze relief five feet high. It was installed as planned and later was acquired by Lincoln Center. He participated in the Flight portfolio...

  • W.T.C: Concrete Abstract #8 (Triptych)
    By Shai Kremer
    Located in New York, NY
Israel-born photographer Shai Kremer lives and works in New York. He completed his MFA studies at the School of Visual Arts (S.V.A) in Manhattan. For many years, Kremer's eye has been drawn to themes of urban destruction and reconstruction and to landscapes evidencing trauma. These concerns merged in his ambitious series W.T.C: Concrete Abstract, which explores the impact of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. For more than a decade, Kremer made periodic visits to Ground Zero, focusing his camera on the efforts towards recovery, repair, and renewal. As a collection, Concrete Abstract conveys the gradual progression from tragedy towards healing. Each large-scale archival pigment print in the series is composed from as many as sixty to 100 overlapping images, resulting in a subtle collage that invites closer inspection while also reading as a unified whole. W.T.C: Concrete Abstract series was shown in the following venues: 9.11 Memorial Museum New York
Museum of the City of New York
The Bronx Museum of the Arts
The Brooklyn Academy of Music Photolux Festival. Lucca, Italy FMoPa. Tampa, USA Julie M. Gallery, Tel Aviv Julie Saul Gallery, New York Robert Koch Gallery...
