About the Item
El Ensayo (the rehearsal) was taken during the Romerias de Mayo festival in Holguin Cuba. The troupe were preparing for a performance of Afro-Cuban dance and were using an abandoned colonial era building as a studio. I sat with the band most of the afternoon sharing a bottle of rum and waiting for a perfect moment.
As the sun set and light streamed through a doorway there she was. Proud and erect, of a mixed hertiage, owning the space. I raised my range finder medium format camera, adjusted the focus and with a barely perceptible click took a photo of strength and dignity.
James Sparshatt’s photographs of music and dance capture the emotion and intensity of people lost in the rhythm of the moment.
The work is available as silver gelatin and palladium platinum prints.

He has also written for the New Statesman. “My love of photography developed while I was working as a photojournalist in Latin America in the 1990s. Both there, and later in Cuba, I was captivated by the energy and exuberance of the festivals and dance so inherent in Latino life. Many of my images celebrate the rich and vibrant musical heritage of Havana, Buenos Aires and Seville. When I look at them I recall the rhythmic beat of the music and almost feel a trickle of sweat running down my back.” His exhibition at the Royal National Theatre, London was described in the Sunday Telegraph as “a dazzling collection of black and white images”. James has been a finalist in the Sony World Photographic awards, the Centre for Fine Art Photography and The Worldwide Photography Gala awards. He has also won the Center for Fine Art Photography’s International award. James frequently gives talks about his work at photographic festivals and exhibitions.

Becker - whose work was first published in Andy Warhol’s Interview in 1973 - was born in 1954 and raised in New York City. In the mid-1970s, he moved for a year to Paris, where he was mentored by his hero, Brassaï. Upon return to New York, Becker drove a cab, toting his camera and parking to complete magazine assignments. A 1981 exhibition of Becker’s work at New York’s Rentschler Gallery included a series of arresting images of patrons taken inside the kitchen at Elaine’s, the storied hangout on New York’s Upper East Side. This exhibition, curated by art director Bea Feitler brought Becker to the attention of Frank Zachary, editor-in-chief of Town & Country. Zachary invited Becker to work for the magazine, where the young photographer further developed his passion for journalistic portraiture alongside Slim Aarons, who, after Brassaï, became Becker’s guiding light. Becker was then enlisted by Bea Feitler to contribute portraits to the prototype of Vanity Fair’s 1983 re-launch. His participation led to a highly prolific association with the magazine as Contributing Photographer, continuing to this day. Becker has also contributed portraits and reportage to The New Yorker, Vogue, W, The Paris Review, amongst truly most major publications. In complement to his editorial work, Becker has accepted a limited number of private and family portrait commissions each year, some accompanied by privately published books, and in the course of his three-years-long project for the Rockefeller Foundation, Becker documented its vast array of philanthropic grant recipients on four continents abroad. Six trade books comprised entirely of Becker’s photographs have been published including Bright Young Things...Category

- Octopus Vulgaris ( Special Edition)By Jan C. SchlegelLocated in VALLAURIS, FRWhile also available as a platinum print on Arches Platinum Rag (56 x 76 cm), this larger version (63 x 99 cm) of Schlegel's famous "Octopus Vulgaris" is a true prowess. It is printed on 30 gsm Japanese Hand-made Gampi paper. Taking into account the thinness of the paper and the fact that the platinum salt emulsion is embedded into its fiber during the printing process, this is a real feat of technical strength. Considered as the most archival process of all; its perfectly matte tonal range goes from a cool, slightly purple black to split tones of brown and warm black, to a very warm brown. Sold framed with a museum glass measuring 85 x 115 cm _______ The ocean has always been one of the most mysterious places on earth. In the past many legends and myths have evolved around monsters living in the deep sea. As a child many of us used to fantasize about underwater monsters like giant colossal squids having so much power that they were able to take down ships. By looking at Jan C. Schlegel his pictures, you can get a small glimpse of the richness and diversity of our oceans. When we think of fish, we usually perceive them as food and think of salmon or tuna. The photographs reveal much more than what could be imagined and are truly a special tribute to all the different kind of species living underneath the surface. There are sea horses that look like dragons with galaxies on their skin, flounders with their perfect flat form and their ability to turn invisible or even squids that will remind you of aliens from another planet. Using platinum printing as a process allows Jan C. Schlegel to create a deepness in his pictures that makes every small detail and structure visible for the human eye. It gives you the impression of being able to feel the animal just by looking at the pictures. This series celebrates the art of nature...Category
