About the Item

The world famous Tule Tree (el árbol del Tule) is the center point of the village of Santa Maria El Tule and is situated directly in front of the Santa Maria de la Asuncion church in the village’s plaza. The Tule tree is a Montezuma Cypress and is believed to be the biggest and oldest in the world. The tree is more impacting in its width than its height with a circumference of an incredible 40 meters. The Tule tree is also thought to be around 2000 years old, and by many accounts is lucky to still be here after it was nearly sold for lumber many years ago. The Tule tree is an evident source of income for the village due to the visitors that it attracts and there is an artisan market and another local market a very short distance away. The Tule Tree may not be the tallest or the oldest tree in the world, but it has no contenders for widest girth award. It’s a natural wonder. It’s best not to look at the tree as a single icon. Indeed there is a family of ancient trees. Rooted in the town of Santa María del Tule, the Tule Tree and its environs comprise a unique natural monument. The town boasts several extremely large and ancient Montezuma Cypress trees. The largest – THE Tule Tree – dwarfs the town’s church and is more than 2,000 years old. This tree has a circumference of 54 meters (164 feet) — the largest girth of any tree on the planet. Antonio Turok was born In Mexico City in 1955. He is an internationally know documentary photographer that has worked in Central America, Mexico and the United States for the last thirty five years covering the human condition of the people of Mexico. Mr. Turok is a recipient of the following grants: National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA), Maine Photographic Workshop Book Award, 1994 Mother Jones International Fund for Documentary Photography Award, John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the USA-Mexico Fund for Culture Rockefeller / Bancomer Award and The FONCA-National System Award for Artists in Mexico. He has published two books, Imágenes de Nicaragua (Casa de Las Imágenes 1988) and Chiapas: End of Silence (Aperture 1998). His work has been collected by numerous museums in Mexico, Europa and the United States at Los Angeles County Museum of Fine Arts, The Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Wittliff Gallery of Mexican and Southwestern Photography San Marcos, Texas and many more. Mr. Turok lives and teaches in Oaxaca, Mexico where he continues to document the human drama that surrounds him.
