Catherine Opie’s series '1999' documents her second epic road trip to capture America leading up to the new Millenium; her first was 'Domestic' (1995-98). The landscapes that comprise this series, portray the often-overlooked parts of America—mainly in the rural South—that stood in stark contrast to the technological age that many American cities were rapidly entering.
The Y2K panic that gripped the country during this period is seemingly absent from these images. Avoiding major interstates and choosing instead to travel on country roads and local highways, Opie sought to capture American communities which, on the cusp of a new century, seemed perfectly content to continue to be rooted in the past.
In this series, Opie intentionally leaves each location nameless, as the photographs capture the feeling of this time rather than to pay tribute to any particular site.
