About the Item

This unique object features a wet plate collodion print and handmade botanical paper framed in a handmade sunken cypress frame. Cecilia Montalvo & Charlie McCullers are a collaborative team. “Places Remember What People Forget” is a series of photographs of Ebenezer Creek by collaborators Cecilia Montalvo and Charlie McCullers. The water at Ebenezer Creek runs swift and black, under and through the forest. Ancient cypress and tupelo stand sentinel over everything which has, and will, pass by. Many different people, over many centuries, have followed this land trail and waterway. Ebenezer Creek forces you to see yourself in the marching of time and events. What began as a memorial to, and discussion of, the Civil War massacre of December 9th, 1864, has grown in scope to be about sacred space, both in terms of a broader human history and its natural story. Cecilia and Charlie’s work includes the use of wet plate collodion as well as digital technology to work below, at, and above the creek’s surface. In addition, fundamental to their work is the incorporation of natural components of the place in each piece, so that the art becomes artifact. Born and raised in Miami, Cecilia Montalvo lives in Atlanta. After graduating from the University of Virginia, she worked at Smithsonian Magazine and for Harvard University at Dumbarton Oaks, in Washington, D.C. She holds an MFA in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Charlie McCullers is a working photographer from Atlanta. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a BFA, and the Savannah College of Art and Design with an MFA in photography.
