Ellie Davies captures the mystery and fantasy of our historic British woodland in imagery that blends photography and conceptual art together. Davies has a strong connection to the forest; she spent her youth gambolling around the woodland of the New Forest with her twin sister. For the past 10 years, the forest has been a place for her to explore the relationship between the individual and the landscape.
It is one of the most present symbols in legend, literature, and folklore; psychoanalysis presents parallels between the unconscious mind and the forest, two places that obscure reason and devour light. Against this bewitching and intriguing backdrop, Davies makes her temporary interventions in the landscape: with smoke, light, and thread. The final images that result from these intimate encounters detail her own attempts to reconnect with the wild landscapes of her childhood, and discover whether these remembered and imagined places can ever be recaptured.
