About the Item

Mark Klett Color Saguaros series (Saguaro 2 arms skyward), 2020 inkjet print on handmade Japanese paper 10.75” x 8.25” unframed / 14.75" x 12" framed Edition of 20 The subject of Mark Klett’s photography is the vast Western landscape and its visual interpretations. He is particularly interested in exposing the effects of time, culture, history and human activity on the landscape and developed the technique of rephotographing to achieve this. From 1977-1979, he was the chief photographer for the Rephotographic Survey Project that reshot, from the same physical location, iconic views of the West by early geological survey photographers who were working in the 1860s. The pairing of these historical and contemporary images of the same landscapes revealed the technical, political and aesthetic decisions made by the 19th century photographers and exposed the ideologies underpinning these supposed neutral images. Later work has focused on quintessential destinations such as the Grand Canyon, Cedar Mesa, Yellowstone, and US/Mexico Border. Referencing visual culture, social science and the language of photography, he demonstrates how our perception of the West is shaped by history of its representation and the role of humans in it, even in its most remote areas. Klett has a MFA in photography from the State University of New York, Buffalo and a B.S. in geology from St. Lawrence University. He has published over fifteen books and shown his work internationally for over thirty-five years. He has received four National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships as well as numerous awards from the likes of the Guggenheim Foundation, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and the Japan/US Friendship Commission. He is Regents’ Professor of Art at Arizona State University, where he has taught since 1982.

  • "remembering the way" black and white photograph clouds sky bird silhouette
    By Marie Navarre

Marie Navarre remembering the way, 2021 archival digital print on Surface Gampi, Rives BFK 25.5" x 25" unframed 28.75" x 27.75" framed Edition of 5 Marie Navarre’s deep interest in poetry, especially the Japanese form of Haiku, has had a profound influence on her work. She conjures dreamlike images that appear to be from just outside the realm of human observation, like the fragments of a distant memory. She prints her mysterious and timeless images of flocks of birds, grey sky and shimmering endless horizons unmoored from specific times and places, then hand stitches over a background of Gampi paper—a soft, silky Japanese paper that has a satin-like sheen. These enigmatic photographic constructions document the implications of a moment rather than its actuality. The artist understands that her relationship to photography is complex: “I have this trouble of being a photographer but wanting to make the photographs into something else. I still think like a photographer even though in some ways I’m sabotaging the way that photography works. I still begin my artmaking process by making pictures. I don’t know how to begin without the photograph.” At play is the tension of a fixed medium documenting a world in movement. Navarre has a BA, MA and MFA from Arizona State University. Her work is collected nationally and she has received a number of awards including a Capp Street Project Residency Grant in San Francisco for her collaboration with Jim Campbell...
