Arterial Shadows, Mexico by Paul Nicklen - Contemporary Landscape Photography

About the Item

“Arterial Shadows" The Delta Series Mexico, 2022 Available sizes: 24 × 36 in / Edition of 20 31 × 46.5 in / Edition of 15 - $5,500 40 × 60 in / Edition of 10 60 × 90 in / Edition of 7 Rising coastal tides of up to 10 feet stretch inland to create a lacework of delicate patterns of rock and sediment that, viewed from the air, almost literally take my breath away. The Colorado River begins just south of the continental divide as nothing more than a trickling stream. As it descends the Rockies, it feeds on meltwater and cleaves through rock to form deep snaking canyons. However, extreme drought across the west has driven the river system to an all-time low. By the time it reaches sea level in Baja, Mexico, its last-remaining branches of freshwater fan out to form giant, sprawling trees in a bid for the ocean. From the window of a two-seater flying low over the earth's crust, I captured the last leg of its journey elegantly scrawled in silt. Heartbreaking in its weakened state and yet breathtaking in its resilience, it was as if the very lungs of our earth were exposed. The fractals branching across the surface mirrored the veins in my arm like a thread weaving all living creatures into the landscape’s tapestry. I felt exhilaration rising in my chest as we flew over branches upon branches of elaborate designs all carved by nature’s delicate hand; the first and greatest artist. Out of the thousands of images I captured during the flight, only a handful of candidates have made it to print. Paul Nicklen's Biography: Paul Nicklen (Canadian) is a visual artist and marine biologist who has documented both the beauty and the plight of our planet for over 20 years. Paul’s photography informs and connects by creating an emotional bond with wild subjects in extreme conditions. After a 20-year career of photographing for journalistic publications like National Geographic, Paul’s perpetuating dream is to revisit his archives for the true artistic gems and release them to the world. His ongoing journey is to continue photographing intimate, evocative, powerful subject matter to create a thought-provoking body of work. Paul hopes his viewers look into the eyes of the animals in his photographs and fall in love with their vulnerability. In addition to being one of the world’s most renowned nature photographers, Paul is a well-known speaker, TED Talks participant, author, and National Geographic Fellow. In the past two decades, Paul has collaborated with scientists, filmmakers, conservationists, and explorers to create awareness and inspire action for global issues such as climate change. Paul has garnered more than 30 of the highest awards given to any photographer in his field, earning a global following of celebrities, conservationists, and fans.

The magical shapes of water gracefully floating or scattering in mid-air reveals the true god-like essence of nature. I am fascinated studying these images of bright tiny mercury-like globes, silky trails, dancing droplets and crystal clear languid sheets. Rick Garcia was born in Havana, Cuba, and very soon after, his parents relocated to Miami, Florida. He was always encouraged to follow his dream of pursuing and developing his talent in art. In later years he found a deep-rooted connection to surrealism, especially the work of Salvador Dali. Garcia had become obsessed with the unique images and amazing technique of the Spanish painter and he eventually traveled to Port Lligat, Spain to visit the home and surroundings of his mentor. After years of attending the Art Institute of Miami, where he refined his artistic vision in drawing and painting, he was soon earning an income from published illustrations. Garcia has enjoyed a rich and diverse career starting with the hit TV show "Miami Vice" commissioning him to create a mural on the side of a three story building, and used his paintings for interior shots. Apart from a growing number of private commissions, his distinctive images were commissioned by The United Nations Postal Administration in 1998 and 2003. His stamps brought awareness to the growing extinction of the rainforest and its inhabitants, and followed with the 50th Anniversary of the World Health Organization, bringing awareness to the vanishing supply of freshwater, where it earned him the prestige of the most beautiful stamp series of 2003. Garcia was chosen as an "Absolut Artist of the 90s" in the popular vodka ad campaign and with his second piece Absolut Electric, this further drew worldwide attention. 1998, 1999, and 2001 garnered him the distinction of official artist to The Grammy Awards where his creations influenced the look of the live broadcast and graced the covers of the official program book, CDs, posters, apparel, and other various items. His work included portraits of stars such as Destiny's Child, Ricky Martin, Coldplay, Santana, Celia Cruz...

Even though this was taken just 600 miles from the North Pole the temperature was in the high 60’s. The Arctic could be completely devoid of sea ice during the summer months in the next 10 to 20 years. This striking scene is a reminder of the fragility of this icy ecosystem." - Paul Nicklen...
