For the series 'Incandescences' he travelled from Normandy to the hinterland of Nice, and from the French Alps to the Pyrenees looking for isolated towns or villages in the wilderness. These inhabited lands are iridescent with light in a natural setting plunged into the dark night. The juxtaposition, here brought to the fore, between the light of man and the black of nature's darkest night remind us here in the west that we no longer have access to the spectacle of a starlit night sky: "an inestimable loss of a certain poetic rapport in the world" according to Xavier Dumoulin.
Concerned with environmental issues, Xavier Dumoulin reveals, with his photographs, a growing dichotomy between man and his environment. Light pollution, globalisation, climatic change, Xavier Dumoulin’s photographs perfectly depict the Anthropocene, the current era in which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.

Xavier Dumoulin has received several awards for his photography: public award Dahinden and solo exhibition at Paris Photo in 2022 with the series “Incandescences”, finalist in Bourse du Talent 2016 with the series «Limites», Jury’s prize at Hiiibrand Photography (China) in 2013, Fubiz prize and laureate at Photocollection in 2012, rewarded by the municipality of Paris at the “Urban photo” contest in 2011. “My work is above all a means of expression, a message to raise awareness of the emergencies of our time.”
