Leonard Freed
Leonard Freed was born on October 23, 1929, in Brooklyn. Although Freed's photographic career is defined by documentary photo essays, such as Black in White America, Freed traveled extensively and captured people, places and things that interested him in locations around the globe. A Magnum photographer, Freed traveled widely, photographing African Americans in America from 1964–65, events in Israel from 1967–68 and in 1973 and the New York City police department from 1972–79, to name a few celebrated assignments. Freed’s coverage of the American civil rights movement made him famous, although he continued to produce photo essays on New York, Italians and many other subjects. Leonard Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 until his death on November 29, 2006, Philipstown.

A photographer herself, model and yogini Kate remains complicit in striking dramatic poses for the Kate nude series by Freed. In this image Kate is supine, arms outstretched, body arched on the backside of a person in a downward dog yoga pose. On the edge of a cliff with the ebb and flow of the sea and waves many feet below, the duo remain in balance above swirling waters. Kate's trust in the universe, a face of abandon, reveals youthful fearlessness and love of freedom. He produced images over a 35 year career, and in recent years used archival techniques to produce his prints. For most of his career he worked as both a Commercial and Fine Art photographer, and during his last years concentrated on his personal imagery. Towards the end of his life journey, Ian was reviving with his partner two 19th century printing techniques in their studio, Platinum Palladium and Gum Bichromate ( one-of-a-kind pieces). This culminated in a large retrospective exhibition in Barcelona which was sponsored by the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation. The Platinum and Palladium prints are particularly interesting as they printed them onto vellum paper therefore transparent and bonded pure gold or silver to the back of the prints ( every print is therefore a unique and timeless piece of art). They have created rare and personalized pieces with an artisanal technique. Ian Sanderson was one of only a handful of artists worldwide producing this type of work. Nowadays, Ian’s partner continues their work, she’s still creating Platinum Palladium prints but also silver gelatin photographs. categories : Black and white photography, 20th. century, Archival pigment print, Sensual, Nude, fashion, model, Grainy, Photographic film, Analogue, Analog, Monochromatic, Fine Art, Vintage...Category
