About the Item
Nobuyoshi Araki (b. 1940) is a renowned Japanese photographer acclaimed for his provocative style that blurs the line between fine art and pornography.
With an oeuvre of over 450 photobooks, Araki's incredibly prolific output has simultaneously earned him both praise and notoriety, in Japan and internationally.
Bold and audacious, the artist explores taboo topics, particularly BSDM, through an uninhibited, autobiographical lens. Thoroughly documenting the intricacies of his dalliances and adventures in Tokyo, Araki captures a spectrum of moments that range from mundane to explicit (and in some cases, illegal, according to Japan's obscenity laws). While Araki has photographed many erotic portraits, he also has photographed with equal enthusiasm his pet cat, toy lizards, and floral arrangements, in addition to his scenes of his Tokyo neighborhood.
This untitled diptych features two color polaroids. The first of the pair captures a woman sitting upright in bed, her knees bent as she indulges in a graphic novel. The second is a portrait of a young woman, nude as she glares into the camera.
Today, Araki's work is included in major international collections including the San Fransisco Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Modern (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, to name a few.

- Bar BackBy Attila Richard LukacsLocated in Toronto, OntarioAttila Richard Lukacs (b. 1962) is one of Canada's most distinctive if not revolutionary Canadian figurative painters. Lukacs established his reputation in the 1980s by creating astonishing large-scale paintings that depicted skinheads, construction workers, and other masculine archetypes in elaborate and erotic scenes. The physical presence of the Lukacs' male subjects stands out as one of the artist's most distinctive aesthetic elements. With meticulous attention to form and proportions, Lukacs skillfully renders his young men with expressive brushwork and an intense, moody palette reminiscent of the old masters. Despite the monumental scale of his canvases, Lukacs begins his creative process with a much more intimate and modern-day tool: the Polaroid. Because of its immediacy and simplicity, it became an essential part of his process in the 80's and 90's. As a result, the artist amassed a trove of over 1,200 Polaroids that depict lovers, friends, and anonymous models in various poses that serve as a starting point for his paintings. In this grid of Polaroids, "Bar Back" is a young man posing nude on top of a first aid kit. The exceptional warmth and rich hues infuse this series of 12 Polaroids with a sensual and painterly quality, a characteristic that is undoubtably present throughout the artist's oeuvre. From 2009-2012 a large touring exhibition devoted to Lukacs' Polaroids was shown at several museums across Canada including Museum London and the Art Gallery of Alberta. - Butt - HBy Andy WarholLocated in Toronto, OntarioAndy Warhol began using the big-shot Polaroid camera in 1971 and continued using it religiously until he died in 1987. Despite the camera being discontinued in 1973, he continued to use it to capture the actors, artists, dancers, politicians, socialites, and factory members of his world. Frequently, Warhol's polaroids were used as preparatory works for his iconic silkscreen portraits or other artworks. They also revealed his immediate personal vision functioning as a chronicle of his surroundings and social life. In 1977, Warhol began work on two new sexually-charged bodies of work, Torsos and Sex Parts. These two series are regarded as Warhol's most daring, arguably the earliest overtly gay work in his oeuvre. Ultimately, the works in these series served to help Warhol assert his own homosexuality. Sex Parts is a series of photos featuring explicit male and female body parts, blurring the line between art and pornography. The inspiration for these works came from Polaroids that Warhol had shot through a series of photoshoots featuring models from gay clubs...Category
