Carlos Gamez de FranciscoHead Over High Heels
About the Item
"Head Over High Heels" is a Chromaluxe print on Aluminum from Carlos Gamez de Francisco's series of digital paintings, "Butterflies in the Stomach." Francisco developed this series as a way to combine his two passions of photography and painting.
He began by photographing and interviewing the youngest generation of Cubans. Each model talked about leaving Cuba to pursue her dreams in another country. The artist was then inspired by passport photos—the first step to leaving the country. Each photo in this series features a plain monotone background with the model looking straight ahead with a neutral expression as if it were her passport photo.
As in the rest of his portraiture, Francisco deconstructs the representation of power and opulence. He uses repurposed objects found in the model's house to create her seemingly lavish outfit. In this case, he created the model’s hat by draping a pair of boots over her head. He then distorts the photo to make the subject's features and proportions appear doll-like.

- 'Slide' - the Rolling Stones in ConcertLocated in Norwich, GBDavid Koppel served his photographic apprenticeship in the rough-and-tumble world of the Fleet Street paparazzi in 1980’s London when his skills captured the very essence of the Me Decade that gave birth to the celebrity culture of today. Koppel’s classic photographs of Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton & the Royal Family appeared in every major newspaper and magazine and marked him out as that rarity amongst press photographers: the artist with a camera. Building on the reputation gained through the photographs for the book Still Waters, his black-and-white portraits of ordinary people now rank among the many famous names in his portfolio. Koppel also went one better and in 2002 bought the St Giles St Gallery , bringing the best of local and international contemporary art and photography to Norwich, including the works of Sir Peter Blake, Terry O’Neill, David Bailey, Maggie Hambling, Storm Thorgersson, Tim Woolcock...Category
