Edward Steichen
First Cast of Brancusi's "Bird in Space"

1925

About the Item

These selenium toned silver gelatin prints are the photographs of Edward Steichen, printed by the renowned photographer George Tice. Tice was the last person to print for Steichen in his lifetime. These prints not only remind us of Steichen's genius but also highlight the formidable quality of printing that George Tice has been known for throughout his career. The 20 year old George Tice came to Steichen's attention after Tice's dramatic photograph of an explosion aboard U.S.S. Wasp was featured on the front page of the New York Times and was acquired for the collection at MoMA. Tice continued to work on Steichen's projects after his death in 1973, and printed the photographs for "Steichen's Legacy" a retrospective memoir which was released with Whitney Museum's Steichen retrospective in 2000. Gallery 270 represents distinguished photographers of the 20th Century and the emergent photographers of the 21st Century from around the world. We place particular emphasis on modern emerging photographers employing traditional processes such as platinum/palladium, cyanotype, and gum bichromate, where the hand of the artist is much more intimately engaged.
