“During the research process for a prior series of photographs, I discovered two related facts about my family tree: a) Mary Bliss Parsons, my 8th great-grandmother, was accused of witchcraft in 1674 in Northampton, Massachusetts, and b) less than two decades later in 1692, my 10th great-grandfather, Samuel Sewell, presided as a judge in the Salem Witch Trials. One body of work came and went, but this ancestral coincidence stayed with me. What is a witch? Who does that word belong to—now?
“Major Arcana: Witches in America is a collection of portraits of women from across the United States who identify as witches. As early as 15th-century Europe, people condemned as witches faced a cruel fate: torture, and in many cases, death. Yet despite its history, recent decades have seen a reclaiming of the word ‘witch.’ In the mid-20th century, emerging pagan communities in the United States and Europe began embracing the term, and since then, ‘witch’ has been adopted by a diverse group of people.
“Major Arcana explores the various ways the notion of witch-ness belongs to those who claim it, representing the witch as a self-sought identity that both empowers and politicizes its bearer. Each woman photographed for Major Arcana (including genderfluid and trans individuals) pursues a form of witchcraft, whether aligned with a religion (like Wicca or Voudou) or a self-defined practice. No two individuals inhabit the term ‘witch’ in quite the same way, but many consider themselves pagan, and engage in a diversity of traditions, including: mysticism, engagement with the occult, politically-oriented activism, polytheism, ritualized ‘spell-craft,’ and plant-based healing. Tim Platt specialises in creating minimal stylised studio portraits of birds and animals, which he describes as beauty shots. A frozen moment in time allows us to observe the world in suspension and will often reveal a graphic beauty that might otherwise flash by in the blink of an eye and remain unnoticed.
Whether observing the magnified eye of a bullfrog, or an eagle captured at several thousandths of a second in mid-flight, he is fascinated by the level of detail that can be revealed in a large format print. It is the stillness of a photograph that gives us time to pause and marvel at the myriad levels of detail in Nature’s grand design and allows us to reflect on the wonderful diversity of life on Earth.

In her new exhibition Churilla draws from her years spent as a swimmer, lifeguard, and athlete to capture the forgotten freedom and exuberance of days of youth spent on the water. Viva la Vida is a mix of timeless portraits and candid photographs "I’ve always been drawn to the water- now my art, my sense of athleticism, freedom and oasis have merged in a way", says Churilla. Her nod to iconic photographers from the past, such as Edward Weston, and Herbert List, is apparent in her portrait work.

The Beatles at Abbey Road Studios, March 30th 1967 during the recording of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, take a lunch break. Later that day they after recording they made their way to Michael Cooper's Flood Street Studios to pose for the famous album cover.
This print forms part of Frank Herrmann's 2021 "Icons of the 1960's" publication of the best of his work from the decade that keeps on giving.
Herrmann, working for The Sunday Times was given rare access to the Abbey Road recording studios to photograph the Fab Four as they worked on the album Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. He stayed an hour and watched them record, have lunch followed by George pouring tea for the Beatles and their producer George Martin.

Frank Herrmann is widely regarded as one of the outstanding photojournalists of the latter part of the twentieth century, with an illustrious thirty year career at The Sunday Times.
Covering stories as diverse as the UDI in Rhodesia in 1966, the Paris riots in ’68, the Yom Kippur War of '73, the U.S Presidential elections of ’75 and the birth of Zimbabwe in 1980, he has travelled to Africa with Bob Geldof to record the famine relief work of Band Aid, has been to the South Pole to photograph the trans-Arctic expedition and has worked with Hunter Davies on several books including The Glory Game and Great Britain – a Celebration as well as his text book book on portraiture titled Portrait photography.
