About the Item
Amanda Arcuri is an award-winning, emerging photography artist based out of Toronto, Ontario. Amanda completed her BFA at Toronto Metropolitan University in Photography in 2009 and is a recent graduate of the MFA program at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Artist Statement
I am drawn to easily accessible sites or seemingly un-picturesque foliage that might be considered mundane or overlooked as my photographic subject matter. I illustrate these spaces or depict scenes in a way they are not normally seen to re-examine our relationship with them. I put emphasis on photographic techniques that highlight the performativity aspect of photography like long exposure and light play. I reference a photographic history through the use of large format photography as a large inspiration for my work began with contemplating what constitutes an altered landscape.
I became interested in this from years of commuting from rural suburbs to the downtown city core and watching the landscape change through the window. I would notice patches of greenery that to me seemed full of wonder but clearly not worthy of recognition from the passers-by. I watched the intricate, delicate and wonderfully strange way foliage droops and folds as it dies from neglect, time or the change of seasons. This has recently led me to focus on indoor floral agreements and the meaning they hold.
A Shot in the Dark
A Shot in the Dark explores notions of death and redemption by photographing flora that has become appropriated by humans for unnatural purposes. Using a combination of long exposures, stained glass filters, and an added element of fire, these seemingly mundane objects are a riff on the classic still life. In my photographs, the flame acts as a metaphor for transformation and upheaval while the light from the stained glass illuminates the floral arrangements to contemplate transcendence.

The artist explains that with each image he seeks to “…create not only an image, but an entire world within my image.” Newbold Bohemia (born 1965, Evansville, Indiana) mainly creates photos, although his work shares as much in common with painting as it does photography. Rather than using the camera to record the world around him, Bohemia prefers to work against the journalistic nature of photography. He creates his own world from scratch. In his studio he arranges still-lifes, builds sets, hires actors, and lights the scene. After capturing the image he often further enhances the work through digital or mechanical manipulation before printing the final work. Although not formally trained as an artist, his work is heavily influenced by his education and work in psychology, marketing and graphic design. Visual organization and story telling are equally important to Newbold Bohemia, although one may take precedence over another is a particular body of work. His work often focuses on the everyday and mundane, as well as historical and societal references. Tension, conflict, and humor are often introduced to create new ways of seeing the world we think we know. Newbold Bohemia currently lives and works in Chicago.
