David Halliday
Olive Wood & Lavender Greens: Framed Figurative Still Life Photograph

2017

About the Item

Olive Wood & Lavender Greens, 2017 Framed Still Life Photograph of Olive Branches (with Hot Pink Tape) Vertical archival pigment print shot in Greece by David Halliday, ed. of 12 61 x 21 inches in white wood artist made frame Also available as unframed 56 x 18 inch archival print - $2800 This still life photograph is from a body of images in continuation of a series first began in Greece in 2007. While reminiscent of previous work in its examination of texture, shape, and form, his subjects take on a mind of their own, getting up and off the confines of the tabletop. His still lifes of found objects curiously resemble a moving figures. The images are often split at the middle into two planes, allowing David to articulate how he experiences color and material relationships. Tops or ‘heads’, if you will are mixed and matched with ‘torsos’ of olive and fig branches that pose against stucco walls in surroundings of dusty concrete. Halliday never ceases to intrigue viewers, as his subjects are transported from the mundane into a realm of fantastical beauty. This series promises to show the sublime inner workings of the artist’s mind. More about the artist: American, b. 1958, Glen Cove, NY, United States, based in Schodack Landing, NY, United States Elegant still lifes bathed in natural light, so masterfully composed one could forget that it is, in fact, a photograph – this is how we’ve come to recognize David Halliday’s work. The artist first gained recognition for his sepia toned silver gelatin prints of common place objects and food staples, emphasized by sublime balances of form, texture, and shadow one could liken to classical painting. In more recent years the artist began embracing his subject matter with modern pops of color in surreal arrangements; vegetables and fruits eccentrically coupled with fish nets and cutlery balanced on undefined tabletops, seeming to float in midair. Now the photographer is retracting his lens to encompass the studio itself as his subject. In a self-portrait of sorts, Halliday skillfully combines elements of his craft in a modest interior view. Halliday was one of the first artists Carrie Haddad began representing when she opened the gallery 27 years ago. Since then he has exhibited nationally and in Europe. He now lives and works in Schodack Landing by way of New Orleans and Nantucket. • Cloud, Contemporary Color Photography on Reflections
    By Roberta Fineberg
    Located in New york, NY
For the image “Cloud” the artist Roberta Fineberg’s attention and equilibrium remained anchored on an anthropomorphic cloud during an unusual springtime (the pandemic 2020) in New York. Sheltering in place, with the soul of the City laid bare, birds sang louder than usual outside city dwellers’ windows. Sunlight illuminated the empty streets, formerly bustling. Nature reigned. A contemporary color photograph, Cloud, 2020 by Roberta Fineberg is 18" x 24" (sheet size) an archival pigment print on baryta paper in an edition of 5. Photograph is signed by the artist. Provenance: RF Archive *** Artist Bio: As a photographer and visual artist, Roberta Fineberg (RF) focuses on the themes of serendipity, inventiveness, and development of ideas for her photography, video, installations, works on paper, and painting. Drawn to experimentation, she explores diverse mediums and subjects such as the ephemeral (butterfly series), stolen moments (documentary work), play, timelessness, the enduring, and significance of matter. In July 2022, Roberta Fineberg’s Double Helix was included in a Sotheby’s auction in New York City and exhibited in the preview show Contemporary Discoveries. Selected exhibitions include: Time Gallery New York (2022), Phyllis Harriman Gallery New York studio shows (2022; 2020), CADAF online art...
