Whether capturing the innate beauty of tucked-away South American landscapes or the reflective moments of unknowing subjects, her photographs are always candid. As a photographer, Robin has an earthy and bohemian way of portraying people and situations that is reflective of the way she lives life. When she is not searching for inspiration from local people and places around the world, she runs The Robin Rice Gallery in New York City. As an artist who feels lucky to be able to parlay her love of the photographic medium into a career, she treats her gallery like a family rather than a business and is dedicated to supporting the work of established and local artists. Blessed with an extraordinary eye, owner Robin Rice has a penchant for choosing or creating works that evoke classic and foreign film imagery - whether reminiscent of Billy Wilder’s take on the Hamptons from his 1954 film Sabrina or a poster for one of Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns. The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current edition of the photograph. Ted Adams’ first solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery juxtaposes surrealism with the documentary art form. What differentiates Mr. Adams’ work from traditional photojournalism is his keen eye for capturing the irony in the events that unfold before our eyes. It is the found objects in everyday life to which Adams is most attuned. He creates a subtle mood and visual mystery that conveys meaning not only from the image itself but also through imagining what exists just beyond the frame. "I see photography as a way of cropping the world—selectively taking things out of context—which often results in stripping the meaning out of the original subject matter, or at least making the image open to interpretation. It’s the opposite of traditional photojournalism whose intention is to create ‘narrative’ and context rather than discard them." While he has exhibited artistic photography in a variety of genres, in the past five years he turned his artistic eye inward to reflect a more autobiographical tone. While some people compare his work to that of Robert Frank, Adams finds himself more and more influenced by Larry Clark whose career was built on pictures drawn from his own life and drug-addled friends rather than a specific documentary mission. The unique presentation of this collection of twenty-three silver gelatin prints enhances the voyeuristic sensibility of Mr. Adams’ work. Each photograph is jewel box in size, measuring 4" x 6" to invite the viewer in to make an intimate appraisal. The craftsmanship of the wide, dark wood frames hearkens back to late 19th-century Shaker design—yet the aesthetic is boldly contemporary, providing a strong backdrop to draw the viewer’s gaze directly to the subject matter. This artisanship extends to the printing where Adams exhibits his skills in traditional darkroom processes. He shoots mostly with Leica and Nikon 35mm film cameras...

  • Large Format Vintage Floral Black & White Silver Gelatin Photograph Tom Baril
    By Tom Baril
    Located in Surfside, FL
Baril, Tom (American, b. 1952) Large format silver gelatin print still life of flowers photo. hand signed and dated 1997 by Baril in pencil below image. black and white photograph. image measures 24.5" x 19.5"w, framed measurements are 37"h x 32"w. Tom Baril is a contemporary American photographer best known for his Polaroid and wet-collodion prints of flowers, landscapes, and architectural studies of buildings and bridges. Born in Putnam, CT in 1952, he received his BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in 1980. In his last year at school, Baril began printing for the famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, where he learned a number of important techniques. Baril's botanical images more closely resemble those of Karl Blossfeldt, a photographer in Weimar Germany. Baril shoots most of his extreme floral closeups with a pinhole camera. But unlike Virginia-based pinhole photographer Beth Beck, Baril uses his camera for resolute directness. Baril's photographs, like his former employer's, often carry a sexual charge, though their eroticism is typically sublimated. Notably, the sexiest flower around, the orchid, is nowhere to be seen. Rather, the translucence of Brugmansia (1998) immediately—and vividly—brings to mind those famous '30s glamour shots of Greta Garbo. And the vibe in Baril's creamy Calla Lily (1998) owes less to Georgia O'Keeffe's sexually explicit floral paintings of the species than to Irving Penn's sinuous fashion photography. The works in the New York series look timeless, betraying not even the stray clue that they were made after 1950. Baril's images of bridge spans, old skyscrapers, and marble columns could easily have been shot by Lewis Hine or Alvin Langdon Coburn...
