Judith Allen-Efstathiou
'Botanical Rhapsody' Realistic/Abstract Floral Pattern Photograph Blue/White

2020

About the Item

"Botanical Rhapsody" by Judith Allen-Efstathiou is an exquisite photographic cyanotype print in deep blue and white of wildflowers abstracted. Highly intricate and lavishly depicted, this gorgeous photograph of flowers on mulberry paper with a deckled edge (small edition of 5) is the result of the artist's own drawings which she has photographed and translated into mirror images for this particular series. Though flat it reads as a rich pattern with much dimension and a lacy quality. Light is also critical to the process and it glows: Judith Allen-Efstathiou "Botanical Rhapsody" 2020 Cyanotype on Mulberry Paper Edition of 5 35.5 x 24.25 Inches Unframed Notes: Also available is a companion to this work identical in size and unframed, as well as a slightly smaller print (22 x 28 inches) in a horizontal format. Each is unframed and on mulberry paper. Also available are two related works which are the same photographic prints on mulberry paper, however these are mounted on thin aluminum (16 x 43 inches each) and a series of two much smaller works mounted on thin copper (16" x 10" each) and one also mounted on copper even smaller (14" x 9"). The cyanotype process - no camera necessary - was invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842 and is a photographic printing process that produces blue prints using chemically coated papers with objects laid on top that are exposed to ultraviolet light. Judith Allen-Efstathiou was born in the U.S., raised in New York, and studied visual arts at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University, Medford, MA. She was awarded a Fellowship by the Museum of Fine Arts for one year of international travel which led to a three decade stay in Athens, Greece, where she is now a naturalized Greek citizen. As of 2000 she has been spending 6 months in the U.S. and 6 months in Greece with much time on the island of Kea, documenting her extensive walks along a single footpath with drawings of wildflowers. This 'Mapping the Walk" series has received international attention and it is her hope this spotlight will help preserve not only the flowers but this lovely ancient path. In the U.S. Judith's work focuses on public art depicting the trees of the northern forest and her relief sculptures in acid-cut, vintage copper salvaged from the Maine State House dome hang permanently in the Maine State House.
