About the Item
A good friend of the artist’s fascinating and prized collection--human and animal bones, taxidermy, ostrich feathers and a child’s figurines strike an intimate and curious portrait.
Shani Mootoo’s photos are not curated. The collected objects reveal much about the character of the individual who owns them. Mootoo’s work invites the viewer to explore and share his story.
This giclee print is editioned, 2/20. It is available as a commissioned piece and will require 3 weeks for delivery.
“When I look at David's arrangements I see the artist, the intellectual, the homemaker, the man who is curious and knows something about everything….In photographing these collections, I create my own, with the camera becoming a net that captures and brings together a wall, or a table, or a bank of bookshelves into one compact space of the photograph.” Shani Mootoo
An accomplished writer, filmmaker, painter and photographer Shani Mootoo earned a BFA from the University of Western Ontario, and an MA in English from the University of Guelph. Her novels have been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and shortlisted for the Giller Prize. Mootoo's paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions locally and internationally, most notably at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Queen’s Museum in NYC, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, and at the Venice Biennale. - Sharon's Sunroom 1/5 - A photograph of carefully curated collected itemsBy Shani MootooLocated in Bloomfield, ONKnown for her photographic portraits of interior spaces, Shani Mootoo reveals the curious and often emotive personal narratives of her subjects. This giclee print by Shani Mootoo is editioned, 1/5. The work is matted, framed. Unframed size is 21 x 31.5 inches. It is also available in two other sizes, 12 x 28 (framed 21 x 27 inches, edition of 10, $2,000); and 16 x 24 inches (25 x 33 inches framed, edition of 8, $2,600.). Mootoo describes how this image was created: "I was at my printer's studio working on a body of photographs when we were interrupted by a customer who needed his attention for a few minutes. I agreed on a pause so that that customer could be accommodated, and my printer suggested I roam the garden, as there was a lot to see there. Just before the exit to the garden was a room crammed with pastel knick-knacks. A glass sliding door stood closed between me and this room, which seemed to be a combination of very special private space and a storage room. I immediately had the sense that I was seeing a photograph waiting to be taken and, as I had my Sony Rx100m7 camera around my neck, I ran back to my printer and asked if I could go into the room. He generously said, 'By all means, go wherever you'd like". On entering, there wasn't much room to negotiate, but I was struck by the carefully...Category

He produced images over a 35 year career, and in recent years used archival techniques to produce his prints. For most of his career he worked as both a Commercial and Fine Art photographer, and during his last years concentrated on his personal imagery. Towards the end of his life journey, Ian was reviving with his partner two 19th century printing techniques in their studio, Platinum Palladium and Gum Bichromate ( one-of-a-kind pieces). This culminated in a large retrospective exhibition in Barcelona which was sponsored by the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation. The Platinum and Palladium prints are particularly interesting as they printed them onto vellum paper therefore transparent and bonded pure gold or silver to the back of the prints ( every print is therefore a unique and timeless piece of art). They have created rare and personalized pieces with an artisanal technique. Ian Sanderson was one of only a handful of artists worldwide producing this type of work. Nowadays, Ian’s partner continues their work, she’s still creating Platinum Palladium prints but also silver gelatin photographs.
