About the Item
This piece is part of Will Wilson's ambitious ongoing project 'Connecting the Dots: For a Just Transition'. This project reckons with the deleterious, enduring effects of uranium mining on and around Dinétah (the Navajo Nation). Grounded in a photographic survey documenting the over five hundred abandoned uranium mines (AUM) in the region, this series illuminates the existence of AUMS—sometimes mere miles away from famous landmarks such as Monument Valley and Shiprock—to ultimately explore possibilities of remediation. This work is opens doors for understanding and contending with the legacy of mining, among other forms of harmful land use, on Indigenous soil.

Will Wilson
Will Wilson (b. 1957, Baltimore, MD) completed his studies at the Schuler School of Fine Arts, Baltimore, MD, and the New York Academy of Art, New York, NY. He began exhibiting with the John Pence Gallery in 1980, where he had 15 solo shows. His paintings have been featured in numerous group exhibitions in galleries and museums across the United States and China. After working in San Francisco for over 20 years, Wilson relocated his studio to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Wilson utilizes traditional methods and symbolic references to create his realistic and satirical canvases, often embellished with trompe l’œil techniques. He explains, “The painting process is a journey and an act of discovery. Maybe it’s a muffled conversation with the subconscious. In the end, I hope the imagery will trigger some kind of personal, memorable experience in others.”
Wilson’s works are represented in the collections of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, the National Postal Museum, the Seven Bridges Foundation, and the George Lucas and Lucas Film Collection, among others.
