About the Item

Carroll Dunham (b. 1949) is a contemporary American artist best known for his distinctive fusion of abstraction and figuration. He rose to prominence in the early 1980s in New York City and was part of a new generation of artists who returned to painting with an idiosyncratic approach to representation. Throughout Dunham's career, his artwork is instantly recognizable across all mediums, regardless of whether it leans towards abstraction or figuration, due to his distinctive use of cartoon-like or graffiti-inspired shapes. Some of his preferred or even "signature" shapes recall human orifices or sexual organs, yet simultaneously they can be interpreted as spontaneous mark-making recalling Surrealist abstraction. "Nine Color Reduction" is an excellent example of the artist's preferred forms and aesthetic. Set against a vibrant saffron background, amorphous forms executed in violet, cotton candy, cherry red, and chartreuse retract, expand, and protrude throughout the center of the work. Rendered with incredible dynamism, the shapes seem almost personified, coming to life across the composition. In Dunham's best work, he invites the viewer to contemplate whether the figures are representative... or simply a joyful abstraction. This piece is included in the collection at MoMA (NYC). Carroll Dunham is collected in depth by many major American museums. Institutions such as the MoMA (NYC) and the Whitney Museum have significant holdings of Dunham's work. Dunham's work can also be found in the permanent collection of the Tate (UK) and the Art Institute of Chicago, to mention a few. Most recently, a new generation discovered the artist because of his daughter, Lena Dunham (the creator of the HBO series GIRLS). Geometric Mouse
By Claes Oldenburg
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Claes Oldenberg (b.1929) is a Swedish-born American artist, renowned for his contribution to Pop art by way of his iconic soft sculptures and public installations. In 1962, Oldenburg debuted his revolutionary soft sculptures at the Green Gallery in New York. Three giant, squishy sculptures of an ice cream cone, a hamburger, and a slice of cake, swelled across the gallery floor, forever changing the way we define sculpture. It has been noted that Oldenburg's early work was largely inspired by Yayoi Kusama's hand-sewn phallic-shaped soft sculptures that enveloped the surfaces of ironing boards, sofas, and boats. Click here to see an exhibition poster featuring a later example of Kusama's soft sculptures. Ranging from voluminous hamburgers (famously on display at the AGO) to ballistic badminton shuttlecocks, Oldenberg's colossal sculptures replicate commonplace objects on a grand scale, often disrupting the environment they inhibit with curious and playful subtexts. The confrontational nature of Oldenberg's sculptures places an emphasis on the viewer, asking us to reconsider our relationship to these recognizable, but obscure, objects. "Geometric Mouse...
