Jose Manuel Broto
José Manuel Broto Gimeno was born in Zaragoza in 1949. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in his hometown and in 1972 he moved to Barcelona. Along with Javier Rubio, Xavier Grau and Gonzalo Tena forms the Trama group and in 1976 participate in the exhibition "Per una crítica de la pintura" at the renowned Galería Maeght, having Antoni Tàpies' support. Since its establishment, the group will work moreover the field of abstraction versus the artistic conceptualism of the moment. This group of artists also published a magazine which they called, likewise, Trama, but only managed to bring out a couple of numbers. While Broto's early works were of a constructivist nature, since 1972 the artist evolves to the simplest informalism, and produces works based on elemental geometric figures on plane colored backgrounds. In 1985 he moves to Paris and during this stay of almost a decade, he meets other Spanish artists such as Miquel Barceló, Miguel Ángel Campano or José María Sicilia. In the early 80s his creations are made on large canvases and the artist is focused in color and its expressive qualities. Broto combines the abstract forms with references to geometric objects or signs taken from other languages such as mathematics, music or writing. During these last years his work has been simplified in terms of materials and his informalism is based on the color, as a way to express and excite, and the gesture, the result of a poetic and metaphysical thought. Among the many solo shows he's had stands out the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía's retrospective (Madrid, 1996) and the traveling exhibition "Broto. Rever", organized by the General Directorate of Cultural and Scientific Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain (Chile, Mexico and Montevideo, 2004). His work has been recognized with the Grand Prize of the Salon de Montrouge (France, 1988), the National Prize of Plastic Arts of Spain (1995), the ARCO Award Critics (1997) and Goya Award Recorded Aragon 2003. Broto's work is present in major museums around the world such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the IVAM in Valencia, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the FRAC (Fond Régional D'Art Contemporain) in Midi -Pyrenees, France and Atheneum Museum in Helsinki, Finland, among others.

Sam Francis’s paintings are a journey into a dream, a voyage into the landscapes of the soul where colours are lights on fire. Alongside names such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline, Sam Francis is an artist who has succeeded in demonstrating a total mastery of abstract expressionism’s impassioned and spontaneous genre. The explosions of colour – red, blue, green and yellow – the streaks, strokes and bold lines of his pictures are the physical synthesis of the deepest crevices of the soul. His colours create rhythmical motifs that, characteristically enough, can be called the “musicality” of his paintings. The work of Sam Francis provides a visible meeting place for the conscious and the unconscious. His pictures are the cross-fertilisation of what has already been experienced with what exists still only as desire, a struggle between melancholy and merrymaking. Influenced by C.G. Jung, the father of psychoanalysis, Sam Francis spent a large portion of his life exploring the premise that dreams, instincts and intuition provide, the keys which unlock the mysteries and meaning of our inner lives. He was also fascinated by the four ancient elements – earth, water, air and fire – which developed into a leitmotif in his work. Sam Francis was born in San Mateo in California, USA in 1923. After starting to paint at the age of around twenty, he soon found himself increasingly consumed by the power of art. He spent much of the 1950s in Paris, from where he not only made frequent excursions to a number of European cities, but also embarked on many journeys to South America and Asia. He continued to move from place to place, primarily in the USA and Japan, right up until his death in 1994. Sam Francis’s first...

Yang Chihung (Chinese: 楊識宏; pinyin: Yang Chihung; born 1947) Taiwanese-American artist.
Yang Chi-hung was born on 25 October 1947, in Chungli, Taiwan. He developed an interest in art in early childhood, and found inspirations to pursue an artist career after reading Lust for Life – The Life of Vincent van Gogh, translated by poet Yu Kuang-chung, in junior high school. Between 1965 and 1968, he attended the National Taiwan College of Art, developing a sound foundation in oil painting under the tutelage of famous Taiwanese artists of the Japanese Colonial period, such as Liao Chi-chun, Li Mei-shu and Yang San-lang. Meanwhile, he actively attended events organized by the modern art groups of Taiwan, namely the Fifth Moon Group and Ton Fan Group, only to find himself both intimidated and dissatisfied with the then relatively conservative art environment in Taiwan. In 1979, he emigrated to the United States of America with his wife, Jane, and their son, Daniel. His pioneering works soon landed him the “Outstanding Asian-American Artist” award. The concept and style of abstract expressionism as represented by the works of Jackson Pollock in the 1950s had great impact on Yang’s work. With the sense of nihilism that gave rise to abstract expressionism in the post-war period, artists no longer clamored to depict the external environment, but rather chose to focus on their own inner experience. Yang Chihung embraced this spirit about the early 1990s when his style turned abstract. In 1984–85 and again in 1985–86, he was twice awarded a year's residency at The Clocktower Studio in New York City by MoMA P.S.1.
In 2013, Yang, along with Xu Bing, Zhang Huan, and Li Chen, were the four artists featured in the Discovery Channel Asia documentary series, Chineseness, a multi-series production that focused on postwar Chinese contemporary artists.
He is of the generation of artists such as Chen Tingshi, Liang Yifeng, Yang Yuyu, Pang Jiun, Yinhui Chen, Jui-Ling Hung, De-Jinn Shiy, Yong-ik Cho, Wan Chuan Chang, Kuosung Liu, Sanlang Yang, Chetsai Shen, Fu-sheng Ku, Chunxiang Zhao, Ming Ju, Ming-Che Huang, Jiutong Liu, In-Ting Ran, George Chann, Yi Hong, Tzu-Chi Yeh, Max Liu, Yi-Hsiung Chang, Che Chuang
