FACE TO FACE is an original hand drawn stone lithograph by the American abstract painter Knox Martin. Printed by hand from a lithography stone in rich black ink on archival Arches printmaking paper, 100% acid free. FACE TO FACE is an black and white expressionist fantasy interpretation of a two human faces, their eyes looking face to face on the upper right above a visual cacaphony of lively lithographic washes, crayon drawing, painted strokes all coming together to create an exciting graphic burst of energetic movement. FACE TO FACE is truly a wonderful example of the magical effects achieved by hand lithography printmaking!
This fine original print is a vintage hand pulled lithograph created by Knox Martin in 1975 at the printmaking atelier of Master Printer Joseph Kleineman in Greenwich Village, NYC.
Print size- 30" x 23.5", very good condition, unframed, hand signed in pencil by Knox Martin, inscribed AP(artist Proof)

About the artist-
Knox Martin (1923-2022) was an esteemed New York School painter.
Knox Martin was born in 1923 in Barranquilla, Colombia. He was the son of the aviator, painter, and poet William Knox Martin, the first man to fly over the Andes mountains.
After serving in World War II, Knox Martin attended the Art Students League of New York on the G.I. Bill from 1946-1950, where he studied with Harry Sternberg, Vaclav Vytlacil, Will Barnet, and Morris Kantor.
In 1954, Knox Martin's friend Franz Kline placed a painting of his in the Stable Gallery Annual.
Charles Egan of the renowned Charles Egan Gallery saw Knox Martin's painting at the Stable Gallery and asked Martin to show his work in a one-man show for the tenth anniversary of the Egan Gallery.
Since then, Knox Martin was a celebrated painter, sculptor and muralist. Knox Martin had an extensive exhibition record and his work is in museum, corporate and private collections worldwide. His two best-known murals in NYC are Venus and Woman with Bicycle. Knox Martin was the recipient of many grants and awards, most recently the Benjamin West Clinedinst Memorial Medal, awarded by the Artists’ Fellowship “for the achievement of exceptional artistic merit.”
Knox Martin also led a distinguished career teaching art. He taught at Yale Graduate School of the Arts, New York University, University of Minnesota, International School of Art in Umbria, Italy, and Fort Rajgat, India. For over 45 years, Knox Martin gave a legendary Master Class at the Art Students League of New York.
Knox Martin lived and worked in New York City. Knox Martin passed away in May 2022.

Karel Appel, (born April 25, 1921, Amsterdam, Netherlands—died May 3, 2006, Zürich, Switzerland), Dutch painter of turbulent, colorful, and semi-abstract compositions, who was a co-founder (1948) of the CoBRA group of northern European Expressionists. He was also a noted sculptor and graphic artist.
Appel attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Amsterdam (1940–43), and helped found the “Reflex” group, which became known as CoBRA (for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam), in 1948. He moved to Paris in 1950 and by the 1960s had settled in New York City; he later lived in Italy and Switzerland.
