About the Item
This work is part of a series exploring representation, diaspora, and transition within the context of the colonisation of Algeria and the Algerian revolution. It is an artistic “Truth and Reconciliation process” as well as a deeply personal and subjective exploration of identity. The exhibition is the culmination of a one-year Leverhulme Trust residency at the University of Portsmouth that was widely exhibited in different countries.
This picture is ironically redolent of the Paris Colonial Exhibition, which strived to present the French colonial empire under favorable light by demonstrating both its diversity and the benefits of the French “civilising mission”. Images of French power, the Michelin man, a caricature of a tirailleur sénégalais (troops in the French army from its sub-Saharan African colonies), a party of settlers showing off on camelback, a group of soldiers posing for the camera in an exotic setting, Notre Dame d’Afrique looming powerfully over the scene and an ambiguous falling angel weave surrealist connections. Here, far from presenting colonisation as a benevolent enterprise, the work suggests its innate tensions, violence and racism under the fake joviality and bonhomie of the scene.

Patrick Altes is an artist of French/Spanish origins, whose work has been deeply informed by his own personal history. Born in Algeria, he has made a distinctive contribution to postcolonial discourse in his work and the emerging Franco-Algerian art movement. As a young adult, he lived in South Africa for two years under the apartheid, where he had his first-hand experience of a society based on discrimination, repression and deprivation of civil and political rights for a large part of the population. It deeply marked him and fuelled in him a sense for the politically, socially and humanly acceptable.
