About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Paul Guiramand (1926–2007), titled Intérieur (Interior), originates from the 1972 edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, April 5, 1972. This lyrical and contemplative composition exemplifies Guiramand’s refined balance of color, structure, and emotion. Intérieur reflects the artist’s fascination with the quiet harmony of space and light, where abstraction and figuration intertwine in subtle rhythm. Through his fluid linework and glowing tonal transitions, Guiramand transforms the intimate interior into a meditation on stillness and beauty, revealing his mastery of lyrical modernism. Executed as a lithograph on velin d’Arches paper, this work measures 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, whose collaborations with leading modern artists of the 20th century defined the art of fine lithography. Artwork Details: Artist: Paul Guiramand (1926–2007) Title: Intérieur (Interior), 1972 Medium: Lithograph on velin d’Arches paper Dimensions: 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1972 Publisher: Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, 1972 Notes: Excerpted from the album (translated from French), This album is the album of friendship, and I want to thank all the artists who wanted to participate. Some lithographs presented here, and whose authors have left us for too long, were made at my request for an album "Adieu a la rue de Chabrol" that I intended to publish ten years ago. So it was at this time that I was able to get the lithos of Braque, Cocteau, Derain, Giacometti and Villon. Mrs. Duthuit-Matisse and her brothers authorized me to print the composition of Henri Matisse, an unused original lithograph of the album by Teriade "La Religieuse portugaise". I am happy to have brought together so many works by contemporary artists, it is a great honor for me and I am infinitely grateful to them. Finished printing in Paris on April 5, 1972, this album was printed on velin d’Arches, in DCCC numbered examples. In addition, a number of copies were printed for artists, friends and collaborators of this album. The original lithographs were printed by Mourlot, and the typography is from Fequet and Baudier. Alain A.C. Mazo, Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, publishers. About the Publication: Souvenirs et Portraits d'Artistes (Memories and Portraits of Artists), published in 1972 by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, stands as one of the landmark achievements in 20th-century collaborative printmaking. Conceived as an artistic tribute to friendship and creative exchange, the album brought together original lithographs by some of the most celebrated modern masters. Intérieur by Paul Guiramand exemplifies the lyrical elegance and emotional depth that characterized the project, uniting painterly sensitivity with technical mastery. This publication embodies the enduring spirit of collaboration between artists, printers, and publishers during the golden age of French lithography, honoring the human and poetic dimension of modern art. About the Artist: Paul Guiramand (1926–2007) was a French painter, lithographer, and printmaker whose radiant mastery of color, light, and composition established him as one of the most refined and lyrical voices of postwar European modernism. Born in Saint-Quentin, France, Guiramand studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Maurice Brianchon, where he absorbed both classical technique and the avant-garde innovations of the 20th century. Influenced by the revolutionary achievements of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, he developed a distinctive visual language that bridged abstraction and figuration with elegance and emotion. His art is characterized by luminous color fields, delicate linework, and an intuitive sense of rhythm, evoking both serenity and movement in equal measure. A central figure in the postwar School of Paris, Guiramand belonged to a generation that sought to restore beauty, humanity, and lyricism to painting after the devastation of war. During the 1950s and 1960s, he achieved international acclaim for his vibrant lithographs and paintings produced at the famed Atelier Mourlot in Paris—the same studio that collaborated with Picasso, Miro, Calder, Chagall, and Matisse—where he refined his mastery of color balance and texture. His subjects—ethereal figures, still lifes, and dreamlike landscapes—reveal a painter of great sensitivity who translated visual experience into poetic abstraction. Exhibited widely throughout Europe and the United States, Guiramand’s work was celebrated for its balance of intellectual structure and emotional depth, its lyrical interplay between color and form, and its timeless sense of harmony. His style influenced later generations of lyrical abstractionists and colorists who admired his ability to unite modernist innovation with sensual grace. Today, his works are held in major public and private collections, including the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and continue to attract collectors worldwide for their refinement and vitality. His highest auction record was achieved by Nu allonge sur fond rouge (1966), which sold for $20,700 at Sotheby’s, Paris, on December 5, 2008, confirming Paul Guiramand’s enduring legacy as one of the most elegant, poetic, and collectible French modernists of the 20th century.
