About the Item

Lithograph Alvin C. Hollingsworth was born and raised in New York City. He began drawing at the age of 4 and by 12 had launched a career in drawing comic book cartoons professionally. This experience culminated with his creation of “Scorchy Smith”; a syndicated comic series, which appeared in 140 newspapers. Hollingsworth’s formal art studies began at New York High School of Music and Art and continued at the City College of New York City where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1956 and his Masters of Art degree in 1959. An expressionistic and figurative artist whose talents transcended beyond the canvas, Hollingsworth’s varied art contributions include a children’s book, entitled “I Like the Guggenheim”, and writing & moderating 3 television series: You’re a part of Art”, “The Creative Years”, and “You’ve Gotta Have Art”. An accomplished poet, Hollingsworth often composed poetry to accompany his exhibitions. Hollingsworth was a member of the SPIRAL group, the legendary 1960’s NYC group of Black artists who met weekly to explore and discuss the art and the political issues of the time, and offer exhibition opportunities to Black artists. He and several SPIRAL group members —Romare Bearden, Hale Woodruff and Norman Lewis — are represented in the Barnett-Arden Collection. Long before the interest in Conceptual and Environmental art, that is, paintings of dense richly textured surfaces, Hollingsworth conceived paintings and incorporated these styles (utilized debris, glass, wood, slate, formica, and paper) His works are in the collections of Lincoln Center, Smithsonian Archives, Brooklyn Museum, James E. Lewis Museum, IBM, Chase banks, Rutgers - the State University, and many more.
