Original colored lithograph and silkscreen, 1990. Edition od 60 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper. Braco Dimitrijević is a Bosnian conceptual artist, who lives and works in Paris. He is one of the pioneers of conceptual art and he dealt with different media like photography, painting, graphics, sculptures, performance etc. His artwork characterizes an exploration of traditional values whether they be in the context of art history or history in general. Dimitrijević observes and chooses what he found rather then creating a new artistic interpretation, where he suggests the arbitrariness of generally accepted values through his artwork. Constantly inspired by the material culture of the countries where he made his artworks, he always put a fraction of their culture. “Dimitrijević’s conceptual art has always avoided the pragmatic neutrality of Anglo-Saxon art, giving precedence to the partiality of a gaze that is never solely visual but investigative and judgmental.” – explained by art critics. This series of Aboriginal (holy) animals depicts Australian animals like lizards, crocodiles, birds etc. in Aboriginal intense color palette, but it also includes portraits of people who look at the animal as they look at animals in the zoo. These portraits look like the portraits of modern artists, so Dimitrijević made a fusion of European culture as well as Aboriginal (Australian) and nature.
