About the Item

Fernando Aceves Humana - Mexico City, 1969 Painter, teacher, graphic artist, Fernando Aceves has the added distinction of socio-cultural activist. Through the collective -Tequio, La Buena Impression - which he co-founded, the very first printing press in the history of Cambodia was shipped from Mexico. There in its location at RUFA (The Royal University of Fine Arts), workshops are given by local and volunteer teachers to students in an endeavor to help them broaden their artistic vision and to hopefully spur the Graphic Arts industry into a viable economic asset for the country's emerging artists. (A particularly heart-warming endeavor as 90% of Cambodia's artists were killed during the brutal regime of Pol Pot.) Aceves also played a major role in the creation of the first metal etching press in Laos together with establishing a printmaking workshop in Bangkok at the Toot Yung Cultural Center. And soon to take place in Oaxaca is yet another ambitious project of Fernando's involving an extraordinary Viorin press. In this workshop, young art students will further their art education and learn the skills of printmaking which they can then take to economically disadvantaged rural areas (where printing presses have already been donated) and teach the artistic discipline of printmaking to all those interested. Aceves studied Visual Arts at UNAM (The Autonomous University of Mexico), and metal etching at the Fine Arts School in Rome. From there he went on to Paris where he had been granted an artist residency. A 3-time winner of the prestigious grant from the National Fund of Creators (Mexico), he has had numerous solo exhibitions of his work throughout Europe, as well as Vietnam and Thailand. This piece was printed at the studio he created, the Char-Rufa workshop in Cambodia. It is signed and numbered 3 in a series of 9.
