About the Item
18th century hand-colored engraving on laid paper by M.R. veuve Tardieu (1732-1826) of "L'Hippotame Jeune" by French illustrater Jacques de Seve (fl. 1742-1788). From "Histoire Naturelle, Generale Et Particuliere avec la Description du Cabinet du Roi" by Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788). Published Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1749-1783.
Comprised of a total of 36 volumes published during his lifetime, French naturalist Comte de Buffon's encyclopedic "Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière" was issued in numerous successive editions and translated into multiple languages, making Buffon one of the most widely read authors of the day. His works revolutionized the study of natural history and influenced subsequent generations of naturalists. Covering a broad range of ideas from botany, zoology, and geology to species classification and evolution, "Histoire Naturelle" established Buffon's reputation in the world of natural sciences and as one of the most prominent figures of the Enlightenment.
Commissioned by Buffon as the principal artist for "Histoire Naturelle," de Seve's illustrations for this publication were more artistic than scientific. Interested in more than executing anatomically accurate and straightforward renderings, each creature is placed within fully realized naturalistic backgrounds, creating beautifully detailed and unique 18th century depiction of these animals.
