About the Item
Engraving by Claude Fessard after Johann Lebrecht Reinold for "Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux d'Afrique" by François Levaillant (1753-1824), published 1796-1808.
François Levaillant was a French author, naturalist, and ornithologist. Sponsored by Jacob Temminck, a natural history collector and treasurer in the Dutch East India Company, Levaillant traveled to South Africa from 1781-1784, collecting over 2,000 specimens for Temminck. These travels became the basis of his monumental six-volume work "Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux d'Afrique", the only substantial ornithological work on Africa published during that period. It contained over 300 illustrations of birds in naturalistic poses, and is still admired today for the quality of the prints and lively style of writing.
