About the Item

Hand-colored signed engraving after bird illustration by William Hayes (1735-1802) from "Portraits of the Rare and Curious Exotic Birds, with their descriptions, from Menagerie at Osterly Park,” published London, 1794-1799. Written and illustrated by Hayes, with engravers and colorists members of his extended family including Emily Hayes, Matilda Hayes, & Anne Hayes. Commissioned by Robert and Sarah Child, the owners of Osterly, self-taught artist WIlliam Hayes wrote and illustrated this series which was the first publication to record a single private collection of live birds.
