Daido Moriyama has a self-proclaimed obsession with cities. In his mod 70s now, his work still shares the same inclination to record his surroundings as his earliest pictures, taken during the dramatic transformation of 1960s post-war Japan. Moriyama used his camera to document the American military occupation of his country and the dissolution of traditional values experienced alongside accelerated modernization. In a process he maintains today, Moriyama shot with a small hand-held automatic camera, rarely with attention to the viewfinder (firing his shutter as if by machine gun.) In his depictions of city life, Moriyama documents cultural change and chaotic urban experience, typically in grainy, black-and-white, high-contrast images, which he prints himself. Early influences include photographers Weegee, and William Klein, all who shared a similar affection for the dynamics of city life.
“Photography is a medium open to everyone.” Moriyama states. “However, at present, original prints are sold upon request of the art market, often produced as a limited edition. I think this is the opposite of the original essence of photography. For this reason, I usually don’t add editions to my works. The value of a photograph is not higher if produced in a limited edition and lower if produced in larger quantities. No matter how many copies of an amazing photo are printed, its artistic value won’t be diminished. On the contrary, isn’t printing and distributing large numbers of photos around the world the best way to show the potential of photography? That said, it rarely happens that I issue a special edition of a photobook or any edition for a specific purpose, but since the purpose of this sale is to support Aperture, I decided to limit the edition and offer these prints at a lower price than usual.” (source: Aperture Foundation)

- Rare vintage William S. Burroughs darkroom photograph ( William Burroughs 1982)By William S. BurroughsLocated in NEW YORK, NYWilliam S. Burroughs photograph c. 1982: This rare portrait of William Burroughs was captured by Marjorie Sovaa (Foy) - a prolific photojournalist in downtown Manhattan’s art scene from late 1970s until her passing in 2021. Most notability she worked as a freelance photographer for several seminal New York publications including The Village Voice and The Advocate. Medium: Silver gelatin print on double-weight fiber paper. Dimensions: 11x14 inches. Very good overall vintage condition with crisp, sharp tones; tape marks in 2 upper areas. Signed on the reverse by the estate representative of Foy from and edition of 2 AP's. William S. Burroughs: A primary figure of the Beat Generation, Burroughs profoundly influenced literature, media and successive generations of youth movements. In his incisive essays, longer fictional works, multimedia and visual art, he worked to expose political, economic and cultural control systems. Burroughs graduated from Harvard in anthropology. He mentored Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg in New York, where jointly they made a pact to change the course of literature. Burroughs explored relationships between word and image and, parallel to his literary output, made photographs and collages. The artist Brion Gysin introduced him to the powerful ‘cut-up’ technique, leading to influential collaborations between the two. When Gysin died in 1986, Burroughs honored his friend by producing hundreds of paintings, collages and pieces of "shotgun art." In 1988, October Gallery held the first solo exhibition of Burroughs' work outside the United States and in 1990 presented Two Collaborations: Keith Haring and William S. Burroughs. In 2012, All out of time and into space featured his space age art...Category
