David Hockney
Los Angeles Olympics Poster (Signed)

1982

About the Item

The colour offset lithograph on Parsons Diploma Parchment wove paper. Published in 1982 for the LA Olympic Games in 1984, David Hockney was one of the fifteen artists invited to create a poster for the Games. Hand signed by the artist in pencil lower right, un-numbered from the limited edition of 750, although there are said to be less than 200 prints in existence. Not to be confused with the unsigned LA Olympics poster that was published in an open edition on much finer poster paper. Literature: Baggott, Brian Hockney Posters London: Pavillion Books Ltd, (1987), p25. Baggott, Brian David Hockney: Poster Art San Francisco: Chronicle Books, 1995, p34. Offset Lithograph poster (Deluxe Hand Signed Limited Edition) on Parsons Diploma Parchment Paper 36 × 24 inches Pencil signed and unnumbered from the Edition of 750 In excellent condition with only the very faintest traces of handling. A super-rare and sought after signed 1980s swimming pool polaroid lithograph and a needle in a haystack of later reprints and copies by ever-bankable artist David Hockney. If desired, the poster text can be mounted out to just leave the pencil signature showing, but we love it just as it is! One of the most coveted, historic and popular David Hockney limited editions created - beloved by American and international collectors alike: The official edition of this work is 750, but the publisher famously destroyed unsold editions after the Olympic Games and only about 200-250 are said to remain. This hand signed limited edition iconic Hockney work was printed as one of the fifteen Official Fine Art Olympic Posters for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. (the XXIII'rd Olympiad). It depicts an aerial view of a swimmer under rippling water broken up into 12 squares. A statement released by the 1984 Olympic committee explains the set as follows - "The posters commissioned for the 1984 Olympics contain an enlightened selection of the best American artists with special emphasis on those who work in Southern California...As the Games develop, transpire and pass into memory, these fifteen posters contain the images, forms and symbols that will represent the 1984 Olympics in the museums, galleries, homes and the minds of people all over the world.” This work is NOT to be confused with the ubiquitous plate signed poster of the same image, which was printed on different paper in an open edition.) In 1982, the Olympic Committee commissioned 15 artists to create posters for the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. Hockney designed this offset lithograph depicting Olympic swimming. It was printed on Parsons Diploma Parchment paper in 1982, in an edition of 750, hand signed in pencil by the artist. Even though this print was published in an edition of 750, after the first marketing blitz, the publisher destroyed the remaining portfolios of signed prints - literally discarding hundreds of them in the dumpster. The Olympic Committee commissioned these portfolios to celebrate and promote the 1984 Olympics, and nobody expected the individual prints to have such enduring value. As the executives running the short-term promotional campaign were neither prophets nor curators, they saw no reason to hold on to these huge prints, as there was no longer any interest or promotional budget or resources. They also didn't have storage - so they thought discarding them was the wisest action to protect the value of the prints that had already sold. They also didn't understand the difference in value and collectibility between hand signed, or unsigned posters -- so the limited edition signed prints were indiscriminately discarded, and only a fraction remained. Published by: Knapp Communications, Inc. Printed by: Alan Lithograph Inc. Unnumbered from the official edition of 750 (though only about 200-250 said to have been preserved by the publisher) Catalogue Raisonne Reference: 131, Baggott DAVID HOCKNEY BIOGRAPHY David Hockney (British, b. 1937) has produced some of the most vividly recognizable and influential works of the twentieth century. Hockney gained notoriety in his mid-twenties, after receiving the Gold Medal from London’s Royal College of Art, and he quickly became one of the defining figures of the British Pop Art movement. In the late 1960s Hockney relocated to California and established himself as a prolific figurative and landscape artist. He is perhaps best recognized for the works he produced there: brightly colored, large-scale evocative images of the Southern California lifestyle, and domestic, intimate portraits of his friends, family, and lovers. Hockney’s works are notable for their quietness of subject, flatness of space, and subtle reduction of form. Throughout his career he has worked in a wide variety of media, including painting, drawing, collage, photography, and printmaking, often utilizing contemporary technologies, including fax machines, laser photocopiers, and other 20th- and 21st-century digital instruments. Hockney has received a vast number of awards and honors, including the First Annual Award of Achievement from the Archives of American Art, Los Angeles; membership to the Board of Trustees of the American Associates of the Royal Academy Trust, New York; Distinguished Honoree of the National Arts Association, Los Angeles; the Lorenzo de Medici Lifetime Career Award of the Florence Biennale; and nine honorary degrees from institutions worldwide. In 1997, he was made a Companion of Honour from the British and Commonwealth Order for his outstanding achievement in the arts. David Hockney’s work can be found in numerous distinguished public collections around the world, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the Art Institute of Chicago; the National Portrait Gallery, London; The Tate Gallery, London; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C. He currently lives and works in Normandy, France.
