About the Item

Donald Saff's “Breathing” is an evocative archival print that plays with abstract forms and organic elements, creating a powerful visual narrative. This piece is part of a limited edition of 60, with this particular print being number 42 of 60, and it measures 28 x 40 inches. Despite its distressed condition, the artwork retains a unique character that adds depth to its story and aesthetic appeal. In “Breathing”, Saff explores the relationship between form and function, presenting a composition that feels both structured and spontaneous. The central red form, reminiscent of a heartbeat or breath, is set against a textured blue background that resembles crumpled fabric or paper, evoking a sense of movement and life. Above this, smaller black elements float, suggesting a connection between the earth and the abstract representation of breath or life force. The distressed condition of this piece contributes to its overall narrative, adding an element of time and history. The signs of aging and wear bring a layer of authenticity and a sense of the artwork having lived through various experiences. This only enhances the thematic elements of the piece, making it resonate more deeply with concepts of life, breath, and the passage of time. “Breathing” is a compelling work that invites viewers to reflect on the delicate balance between life and its inevitable wear. The print's condition, combined with its rich imagery, makes it a meaningful addition to any collection, especially for those who appreciate art that speaks to the transient nature of existence. This piece by Donald Saff is not just a visual experience but an invitation to explore deeper themes of life, aging, and the breath that sustains us all.

"Untitled"
By Tom Baldwin
Located in Surfside, FL
Recently graduated from Pasadena’s legendary Art Center College of Design, Tom Baldwin created the series of inkjet prints Japanese Gardens in 1996 on his computer, using then-nascent graphics technology to "paint" his images on the computer screen. Baldwin embraced this technology and its accompanying printing process not just for the speed and ease of their use, but because the artist could achieve the absolute flatness that the principles of modernism preached but ultimately--because of the limitations of their tools--never reached. These colorful, semi-abstracted views of Japanese temple landscapes subtly, but radically redefine picture space. Baldwin shifts fore and backgrounds, giving equal weight to skies and hillsides. Endowing a lowly bush with a vibrant purple or orange might cause it to pop out of proportion, but ultimately lends balance and stability to the work itself, in short, returning the composition to its original, harmonious whole in keeping with the subject matter. these original prints employ a color scheme that seems more reminiscent of 1980s Japanese pop art beer advertisements...
