About the Item

Dorothy Simpson Krause’ “September Morn” (1990) is an early digital collage in which the artist has appropriated and juxtaposed an image of painter Paul Emile Chabas’ “Matinée de septembre” with the honorary postage stamp issued in 1948 commemorating the work of women’s rights activists Elizabeth Stanton, Carrie Catt and Lucretia Mott. Chabas’ “September Morn,” depicting a nude bather in ankle-deep water, caused years of controversy and became emblematic of the fight over censorship, morality laws and art in the early part of the 1900s. In warm sepia tones, this work was executed on a dot matrix printer and the surface has a soft, textile-like quality. Krause is a painter, collage artist and printmaker with long experience of incorporating digital mixed media into her art. She is deeply inspired by history, nature, travel, and innovative art making processes. Her work is exhibited regularly in galleries and museums and featured in numerous current periodicals and books. Krause is Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts College of Art where she founded the Computer Arts Center and a member of Digital Atelier®, an artists collaborative. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and symposia and a consultant for manufacturers and distributors of products which may be used by fine artists. 'Papiers collés' or collage was first used as an artist's technique in the early twentieth century to generate a kind of abstraction. Digital collage allows the artist to appropriate or reuse images in original compositions, thereby creating new meanings. The print is 13.25 x 16 inches, in a silver metal 23.25 x 24.25 inch frame. While the price includes the frame, it shows some light wear consistent with the age of the work. The work is in excellent condition.
