About the Item

Keith Haring announcement 1991 (Keith Haring Dolce Vita festival): This brilliantly rendered 1991 Keith Haring Dolce Vita announcement card was published on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the Swiss Confederation. Features classic Haring figures dancing in an interlocked position; with a bold Haring printed signature on the upper right. The standout Haring Dolce Vita imagery to which the announcement is based, was created by Haring in 1987 for the Dolce Vita youth center & nightclub in Lausanne. Today the logo is part of the Musée Historique in Lausanne. Offset lithograph on high gloss paper stock. 1991. 6 x 4.25 inches. Minor signs of handling. Very good overall vintage condition. Keith Haring printed signature; from an edition of unknown. Literature/References: Keith Haring: Posters (Jürgen and Osten). Keith Haring Dolce Vita: a history: In the 1980s, Keith Haring was often in Switzerland. In 1983, his friend, the Swiss artist Pierre Keller, asked him to create the poster for the Montreux Jazz Festival. When the two friends were in a restaurant in Bordeaux in the mid 1980s, Haring had drawn a design for the Dolce Vita club on a piece of paper. This was a fitting symbolic picture for Dolce Vita, a place of uproar. At the beginning of the 1980s, Lausanne’s alternative youth took their anger to the streets and made their voices heard. As a result, the city gave them a youth centre – specifically, Dolce Vita, located in the former depot of the municipal transport services. In 1985 the Dolce Vita nightclub was formed. In August 1989, London magazine “The Face” named Dolce Vita the hottest club in Switzerland. Dolce Vita was also the first venue in Lausanne that played house music. For the turbulent youth, house still sounded too much like sultry disco music, even in 1988. So, there is quite an ironic twist in the fact that one year prior, the emblem for Dolce Vita was designed by Keith Haring: a passionate clubgoer and catalyst of gay subculture. Many people may not be aware of Haring’s primary source of inspiration: the dance floor. More precisely: the gay club Paradise Garage. Thus, the club experience is the key to Keith Haring’s artistic world. Art rarely was as musical as with Haring: It dances and dances and dances. (Source: clubculture ch) _ Keith Haring rose to prominence in 1980s New York within the East Village art scene alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, and Jenny Holzer. He bridged the gap between the art world and the street, graffiting city subways and sidewalks before committing to a studio practice. Haring united the appeal of cartoons with the raw energy of Art Brut artists such as Jean DuBuffet as he developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic that comprised energetic, boldly outlined figures against solid or patterned backdrops. His major themes included exploitation, subjugation, drug abuse, and the threat of nuclear holocaust; Haring boldly engaged with social issues, especially after receiving an AIDS diagnosis in 1987. Today, his work sells for seven figures at auction and has been the subject of solo shows at the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Albertina Museum in Vienna, among other institutions.
