About the Item
"SS (Masks We Wear)", 2018, is a limited-edition silkscreen print, double-sided by Andrew Cornell Robinson. This print is an edition of 40. Each print is signed, stamped and numbered. The prints measure 17x17".
Note the double-sided printing – surfaces of text, surfaces of image. See the full installation (photo above) as a striking performance in itself with myriad possibilities for color, pattern, language, culture, politics, identity. It's a dynamic body of work that delights in the craft of making and the experience of revealing a tapestry of image and language.
Initially inspired by a visit to the Talking Sculptures of Rome, which for the past five hundred years Romans have written poems, prayers, and political protestations and pasted them on a group of ancient sculptures in the eternal city. Much like the public exchange of ideas that take place today upon social media platforms and street art, he has created a collection of silkscreen prints comprised of 1,000 drawings with corresponding text messages printed on the back of each image.
Andrew Cornell Robinson is an interdisciplinary artist working across media (ceramics, textiles, painting, prints, etc.). His work is influenced by collaborative craft communities, traditions, and the performative qualities of cultural production. The underlying ideas exploring identity, histories, rituals, and power in his work aim to create a space for intimate experiences and open narratives.
He studied ceramic sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art and the Maryland Institute College of Art where he received a BFA. He was awarded an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, where he became interested in the intersection of memory, identity, politics, and power. He has been featured in many publications including Sculpture Magazine, Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, Art Info, et al. He has participated in curatorial and research projects and recently was a participating artist in Debtfair a project in the Whitney Biennial.
Andrew has also worked on collaborations with designers such as Donna Karan’s Urban Zen project where his work in ceramics led to workshops with artisans in Haiti and the creation of a ceramic studio in Port-au-Prince. He is currently working with The Powerhouse Arts Workshop and their design team from the Pritzker-prize winning architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron in the design and development of a contemporary industrial fabrication center established to serve the working needs of artists in New York City.
He is currently a member of the faculty at Parsons School of Design and Greenwich House Pottery in New York City. His work has been presented extensively throughout the world with the Anna Kustera Gallery, David & Schweitzer Contemporary, Christopher Stout Gallery, Joyce Goldstein Gallery, Baltimore Contemporary Museum of Art (Maryland), Ross Art Museum (Ohio), the Crafts Council (United Kingdom), Saint Joseph’s University (Pennsylvania) and many more. Andrew lives and works in New York City.

"CYCLOPS", print, hand-tooled aluminum intaglio, abstract, monotype, framed
By Harold Wortsman
Located in Toronto, Ontario
CYCLOPS is a hand-tooled aluminum intaglio print on Rives BFK 250g paper with deckle edge. It is a framed monotype in black matte wood with spacers under glass to maintain the deckle edge of paper. The print floats on museum board using archival Hayaku Japanese Hinging Paper. Like Wortsman's sculptures, the abstract components here seem to possess both organic and geometric forms. Note the four corners of black, bracing the center serpentine shape of copper and black speckled white – it is characteristic of Wortsman's practice. Warm, contemporary, uniquely crafted, yet speaks to ancient, tribal traditions of art-making that cross cultures and histories. Highly attuned to the indigenous art of Africa, the Middle East, India and Asia, his forms are organic and geometric abstracts with masculine and feminine attributes that resonate together as a pleasing enigma. They make sense immediately, yet never give up all their secrets.
