About the Item
Danaïde
by Chuck Sperry
2025
18 x 35 inches
Edition of 400
7 colors on cream paper
Signed and Numbered
"Danaïde" presents an evocative reimagining of the mythological figure, adorned in early spring flowers and bearing a terracotta amphora beautifully decorated with the winged horse Pegasus. As Pegasus stamps the earth, so bursts a vibrant spring; just as Hippocrene flows from Mt. Helicon, inspiration, too, flows from the source of the muses.
Inspired by the legend of the 50 Danaïdes, condemned to eternally toil, endlessly carrying water to fill a leaking vessel, this print captures the spirit of perseverance against insurmountable odds. Much like Sisyphus, who endlessly rolls his stone uphill, the Danaïdes represent the relentless struggle for justice, equality, and democracy.
In the words of Albert Camus, “The struggle itself — to continually work to fill the leaking jar — is enough to fill her heart.” The image invites us to imagine the Danaïdes not as tragic figures, but as symbols of hope and determination, ever striving for a better world.
This limited-edition print by Chuck Sperry encapsulates these timeless themes with masterful technique and striking visual impact.
