About the Item
Juan Genovés Candel (Spanish, 1930-)
Painter, illustrator, and graphic printmaker engraver. He painted 'El abrazo' ('the embrace'), which became an emblematic poster during the Spanish political transition. He was born in Valencia in 1930. The son of Juan Genovés Cubells, an artisan whose family was close to the labor movement. His mother Maria Candel Muñoz came from a family of practicing Catholics. In 1946 Genovés studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia and then settled in Madrid. He set up the 'Los Siete' group together with other artists in 1949, and the following year he travelled to Madrid, where he was influenced by the works by Fra Angélico and Hieronymus Bosch in the Prado Museum. In 1957 he had his first solo exhibitions in the gallery Alfil, Madrid and in the Museo d'Arte Moderna, Havana. He is considered the most important representative of modern Spanish painting. His images, executed in a politically engaged, critical realism, were a direct response to the fascist violence of the late Franco Regime. Recognized for an aesthetic style rooted in Social Realism and Pop art, The artist's themes included arrests, manhunts, torture and murder scenes, with the victims confronted in an anonymous crowd with their equally faceless henchmen. He used stencils and spray guns for the hunted individuals that he portrayed in an "ants-like hustle and bustle."
The work of the artist is represented in numerous museum collections, his work is represented by the Marlborough galleries and regularly exhibited in London, New York, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris and Monaco, as well as at international art fairs. Genovés’ work is found in many of the most important public collections in the United States and Europe, including: The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; Centre National d’Art Contemporain, Paris, France; Galeria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Rome, Italy; The Museum of Modern Art, NY, The Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain; Israel Museum, Jerusalem; IVAM, Valencia, Spain; Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels, Belgium.

Juan Genoves
Juan Genovés was born in 1930 in Valencia, Spain. Artist committed to the Spanish society of the time, he used art to express his concern and willingness to renew the art scene of the time. This commitment to his environment led him to meet other artists with whom he formed important groups like The Seven (1949), Parpallós (1956) and Hondo (1956). Although in his beginnings was linked to informality, after a pictorial crisis during the 60s, his art turned figurative and developed an expressionist and provocative painting. A deep relationship with movements opposite to the Franco regime, made his work a reflection of his thoughts about "the individual himself" against the "crowd". Among his main influences excels expressionism, pop art (from which took the usage of clothes and real objects glued directly on the canvas) and cinema (using narrative procedures as tracking shots or close-ups). Genovés died the 15th of May 2020, in Madrid.

This Japan-USA temporary work of art reflected the similarities and differences in the ways of life and the use of the land in two inland valleys, one 12 miles (19 kilometers) long in Japan, and the other 18 miles (29 kilometers) long in the USA.
In Japan, the valley is located north of Hitachiota and south of Satomi, 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of Tokyo, around Route 349 and the Sato River, in the Prefecture of Ibaraki, on the properties of 459 private landowners and governmental agencies. In the USA, the valley is located 60 miles (96.5 kilometers) north of Los Angeles, along Interstate 5...

Rainbow: colorful Rosenquist pop art with gold, turquoise, purple, pink, blue
By James Rosenquist
Located in New York, NY
A classic Rosenquist pop art composition with gold, turquoise, purple, pink, blue, green and yellow. Characteristically surreal and graphic, Rainbow incorporates bold geometric forms with painterly washes of color and airbrush texture. Image 17 x 21.5 in. / 43 x 54.5 cm
Lithograph with screenprint on cream-coloured Hodgkinson handmade Wookey Hole paper. Edition of 75 with 8 color trial proofs: this impression 8/8. Signed and dated 1972 lower right in pencil; titled, numbered 8/8 and labeled Color Trial Proof lower left in pencil.
This graphic, colorful scene is based on Rosenquist’s 1962 oil painting of the same name, collected in the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. The artist used real glass and wood to construct windows for the original painting – here, house siding is abstracted to bold, black horizontal lines, and the window glass is printed in dark gold ink. At the top of the composition, a window with shutters pushed open is colored in turquoise, with sharp black shadows. The left-hand window pane is shattered, and to the right, the outline of an oversized...
