Ian Davenport's art draws upon the rich heritage of European and American abstraction, and also the contemporary urban environment of London.
The ‘splat’ paintings explore a new medium of creating art which grew out of a workshop Davenport held for children in his studio. This is an example of Davenport's great strength in experimentation with paint. This mass of colour forms from a multitude of splats which follow the entirety of the colour spectrum, ranging from reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, pinks, purples and neutrals. The vibrancy of the colour is truly remarkable. The significance of gravity is also an essential component in this work: allowing the paint to run down the entirety of the material surface.
