Jules Chéret
Théâtrophone by Jules Chéret, Belle Epoque lithograph, 1896

1896

About the Item

Belle Epoque lithographic poster of Jules Chéret’s Théâtrophone, published in 1896 by Imprimerie Chaix (Ateliers Chéret). This artwork is presented in archival rag mat and arrives accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. “The fall of 1881 was a notable one in Paris: The City of Light was hosting the first International Exposition of Electricity off the Champs-Élysées. The expo created a buzz, with Europeans flocking to Paris to see the wonders of electricity, from Edison’s recently-invented light bulb to Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone to a little device that seemed to fuse the two together: the theatrophone. The theatrophone was a curious thing. The concept included wires leading from a stage into a dual-channel audio system with audio for each ear. From there, the wires would transmit sound to a receiving audio source. For the Expo, 80 telephone transmitters had been set up across the stage of the Paris Opera and connected (via cables through the Paris sewers) to rooms in the Paris Electrical Exhibition. Visitors could pick up the theatrophone and hear a live performance of the opera—more than two kilometers away from the actual stage. According to the New Scientist, it was the first-ever broadcast of stereo sound.” (Tanya Basu, Mental Floss, 2015) While this poster was printed in multiple sizes and formats, this 1896 edition of 25 strikes on Japon paper is the most desirable and extremely scarce edition. Japon paper allows inks to rest upon its surface rather than being absorbed by a more permeable paper stock. The rare, small format poster lithographs created at this time were printed using rich, dense, lead inks. This world-class example of lithography captures superior resolution and color-richness to that of its large-format counterpart. Notable museum collections containing this work include: Museum of Modern Art, New York (large-format version), Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (large-format version) Notable museum collections featuring works by Jules Chéret include: Musée d'Orsay, Paris; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C; and more.

TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, HENRI DE (1864-1901) "LA VACHE ENRAGÉE" Wittrock P27B, Adhemar 197 Original color lithograph Wittrock’s State III of III with letters Printed on buff wove paper, c. 1896 Bears artist stamp “TL” upper right, dated 96 Image size: 22 1/2” x 23 5/8” Several examples are known where Lautrec drew on work by other artists whom he admired. In this poster there are clear references to Adolphe Willette's humorous themes and rococo style of illustration. Willette was the founder and illustrator of the short-lived monthly “La Vache Enragee”(the angry cow) edited by the cartoonist Adolphe Roedel. This colored poster of the same title was commissioned for the appearance of the magazine March 1896. As a reference to the wretched financial state of most artists, the term “manger de la vache enrage” (meaning roughly, “meaning not having enough to eat”) was adopted as the motto for the “Vachalcade”which was held on Montmarte annually from 1896. This was an artists' procession, with fanfares and allegories on fame and the muses; it also included a furious cow and a troupe of pretty girls as a satire on Europa with the bull. The event was organized by Roedel"(Adriani p.217) Toulouse-Lautrec took up lithography at a high point in its history, when technical advances in color printing and new possibilities for large scale led to a proliferation of posters as well as prints for the new bourgeois collector. In his short career, he created more than three hundred fifty prints and thirty posters, as well as lithographed theater programs...
