About the Item

Fantastic garden succulent grotto - Terowie, polymergravure print, archival inkjet chine collé was created in a series of fantastic garden landscape prints, featuring photographs taken at Terowie in the mid-north of South Australia en-route to Broken Hill, an outback city where 'Priscilla, Queen of the Desert' was filmed and nearby Silverton where Mad Max 2 was filmed. The plants that survive in these outback townships are tough and adapt to their harsh surrounds. My original digital photographs were colour-heightened, forming new, surreal landscapes. I then made a grayscale image from the photograph and printed this to make a film positive which I used to create a photographic photopolymer plate. I printed the high-intensity colour background onto Hahnemuhle 150gsm paper using an Epson Stylus Pro 7600 (now I use an Epson Stylus Pro 3880). The inkjet print is dampened and an archival glue is sprinkled on the back of the print, and it is then laid face-down onto the inked surface of the intaglio photopolymer plate, and a carrier sheet of 400gsm paper is placed on top of the inkjet print. As they are pulled through the etching press, under extreme pressure, the etching ink is printed onto the inkjet print and simultaneously the inkjet print is glued to the carrier sheet of paper. This technique is called chine collé. Mostly the chine collé Japanese paper is a single colour, or the Japanese paper can be cut into shapes and printed in a similar way. I have developed this printmaking technique to add colour to an intaglio print, rather than using multiple plates to create a colour print. This print is unframed. Edition number 11/12. My fine art prints are hand-printed through an Enjay etching press at my Agave Print Studio, Trentham, Victoria, Australia.
