About the Item

Dieter Roth (1930-1998) was born in Hannover, Germany and grew up in Zürich, Switzerland. He started an apprenticeship as an advertising graphic designer and took private lessons in lithography. From the 1950s his style in his sketches and prints develops to very strict geometric and abstract art, which is constructed by mathematic principles. Very early he also deals with kinetic art in his printmaking and in 1961, already well known for his graphics and books, he received the order to design the poster for the kinetic art exhibition "Bewogen Beweging" from the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Netherland with international artists like Duchamp, Spoerri, Tinguely and many more. After the exhibition was shown in Kopenhagen and Stockholm as well, Dieter Roth has been stepped up in the first line of the kinetic artists, while he already changed his style and dealed withe symmetries and new printing techniques by combining most of the possibilities given in the spectrum of printmaking. After a teaching assignment in Providence, USA in 1965 he changed his style very radical in the late 1960s. Roth started to experiment with organic decline in his prints by using aliments which are reacting with the paper or cardboard and averting from the classical print-techniques by overpainting his prints with water- and oil colours or edible liquids and goods, like chocolates, cocoa,... In the 1970s Dieter Roth met Karl Schulz and they built their own print studio in a former carpentry wherethey tried to improve the ways to bring Roths sketches on the print carriers in the intaglio printing. In this time he also combined diverse techniques of printing in one work , like offset, lithography, letter-press technique and intaglio printing. From the 1980s on his work became more and more autobiographical in diaries, films and notebooks and he only published a few prints in this time. Kleine Landschaft auf hoher See (1972) Linocut print 22.7 x 28.6 cm (sheet-size) 48 x 60 cm (frame-size) Edition of 200, numbered, dated and signed by hand (41/200) This is a print on a very thin transparent paper which was folded and you can still see the fold marks. Originally this graphic was enclosed with the book "Frische Scheiße oder: Die Korrumpierung der Germanistik... ("Fresh shit or: The corruption of German Studies...") which was published in 1972.
