About the Item

Artwork details: Jamie Williams, Nightlies, image 23cm x 23cm, sheet size 26.5cm x 26.5cm, on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Paper Signed with Edition 1/20 verso, 2022 Jamie Williams is an exciting young digital artist who is constantly pushing his practice. Having worked on major shows such as Stranger Things, Pacific Rim the Black and many more, he is busy exploring what digital abstraction can be, and how it can be done in 3D. This compelling set of images are what he calls his Nightlies, a play on Dailies, a daily warm up practice vital before embarking on the main tasks of the day as a digital creator. Each image is painted in one go, in photoshop with a graphics tablet . These are 2D paintings. They are planed early in the day and painted by the end of it. ‘Its not about trying to polish and perfect its about trying to capture that snapshot in my head’. Coming together as a series of works these images are snapshots of the place that the artist likes to inhabit, mostly in his dreams. ‘When I dream vividly its all in the same continuity, they all take place in the same world. It's like when you go somewhere you know, you have a particular image of that place in your mind’. He is excited not by creating high fantasy but playing with magical realism; things that are close to us that almost feel slightly off: an eclectic feeling. Artist Bio - Jamie Williams (1994 - An Animation Graduate of the Norwich University of the Arts in the UK, Jamie spent three years in the Japanese animation industry working on various Anime projects, for both Japanese and Western distributors. In Tokyo he studied under industry veteran Yoshikatsu Matsumoto. This training was unique in terms of industry practice as Matsumoto-San is a traditional painter working through a digital lens. His most recent contract was working on the new production of Stranger Things and he is about to move to London for his next adventure. A visual development artist and background painter, Jamie has lived betweeen, the ‘deep in the woods of Southern France under a roof made of castle ruins' and in total contrast Iceland. 'I love exploring new techniques and ideas that pull me from my comfort zone; currently taken in by the cult of Blender’. In his practice he seeks to explore and challenge. Inspired by the visual storytelling of Genndy Tartakovsky and Scott Wills, Jamie is also deeply influenced by Jamie Hewlett and his imagery for The Gorillas. He looks to the world-building of Ian Worrel and the expressive emotions in Lip Comarella’s work, ‘they are the unique creators who enthuse me’. He is excited not by creating high fantasy but playing with magical realism, things that are close to us that almost feel slightly off; an eclectic feeling. ‘In the creative industries, ways of working are always changing. If there is a better tool out there I embrace new technologies and try and bend them to my practice. At the moment I am incorporating live action footage with sculpting in VR in an attempt to expand what is possible for animation. I like experimenting with the latest 3D techniques, some weird and complicated, to create something that looks like reality in an abstracted form’.

  • Abstract India Edition 3/5 Linocut Print Nature Sea Jetty Yellow Green Australia
    By Mukesh Sharma
    Located in Norfolk, GB
There is a natural and raw understanding in Mukesh Sharma’s prints that both depict, and are influenced by, the Rajastani communities of his home town in rural India. In these Limited Edition fine-art prints, made over a period of twenty years, we are offered the colours of India’s ancient land, the textures, light and the patterns that are everywhere. In the patterns of the arable fields to the jali's (carved screens) in the architecture. This work is however not romantic nor nostalgic but shows a deeper rooted need to offer a visual heritage of place, of where the artist is from and the journey that he is taking. The results are both compelling and honest. Mukesh Sharma, Jetty 2, Lino-cut on German Ivory paper Edition: 3 of 5, 2005 Image size: 47 x 39 cm / Sheet size: 79 x 55 cm Unframed 'What mesmerised me was the meeting of the sea and the mountain peak. Where the Jetty, a special curved wooden staircase leading to one end and the deep crystal clear sea at a distance. These scenes were amazing to me.' Mukesh Sharma's work: It is often in childhood that paths are set for what we will become. Mukesh Sharma hails from a rural, agricultural village in Rajasthan, India. His Father is a craftsman who fixed and mended farm machinery and understood the working parts in the processes. Sharma followed in his Father’s footsteps, as is often the case in Indian families, but his was not the machines of the fields but the presses of the printing studio. Like his Father, Mukesh Sharma is fascinated with understanding how things work and how he can manipulate the metal in his hands. It is not surprising then that his medium of choice is printing. One of the most physically challenging of all the practices, it can often be physically challenging as well as technical and detailed. In his youth, Sharma would draw with stones on walls and floors. He was lucky his family encouraged this and he is grateful for his early art-training at the Jaipur School of Art but it was at the Baroda Art Department that he was introduced to the great printing traditions of Jyoti Bhatt...
