Mychael Barratt
The Serpentine, Hyde Park – Autumn, after Bruegel, Figurative Dutch Style Art

2020

About the Item

The Serpentine, Hyde Park – Autumn, after Bruegel is a limited edition etching by Mychael Barratt. Barratt uses Ravilious’ The Vale of the White Horse as inspiration for this witty etching. Silkscreen Print – A printing technique whereby the artist paints glue or stencils their work onto a mesh stretched over a wooden frame. Colour is then pushed through the mesh (which hasn’t been blocked with glue) with a squeegee. This can be done several times, layering different colours to create the image seen before you. Mychael Barratt was born in Toronto, Canada, however, considers himself to be a Londoner since arriving for what was supposed to be a two-week stay thirty years ago. He is a narrative artist whose work is steeped in imagery relating to art history, literature, theatre and everything else that overfills his bookshelves. He was an artist in residence for Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre throughout Mark Rylance’s reign as Artistic Director. In 2011, just prior to the 2012 Summer Olympics, he was commissioned to paint a large-scale mural on T. V. Edwards Solicitor’s building on the Mile End Road. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and in 2013 was elected to be its twelfth President. His work is held in many important collections including Her Majesty The Queen, British Museum, the British Library, Ashmolean Museum, V & A Museum, and the Jiangsu Museum of Contemporary Art. Storm Spectres I’ is a unique monotype made at the artist’s studio in Cadiz, southern Spain. Much of Tim’s work takes the land or the sea as a starting point – a vast unending springboard where he explores concepts of human mortality, perceptions of life and death, emotions and colour. Although the pieces are clearly some sort of landscapes there is always ambiguity allowing the viewer to make a personal interpretation of what is directly in front of them. Tim’s monotypes are completely unique pieces of work made from inking up several copper etching plates...

With hand-drawn lines overlaying a field of narrow, vertical stripes, Tom Orr’s Waterfall prints capture the sense of movement and space of a cascade. Shimmering moire’ patterns and subtle tonal differentiations between the two sets of lines enhance this dynamic visual phenomenon. Orr has previously explored this theme in different media in gallery-based installations and public sculpture commissions. Tom Orr created the "Waterfall" series of etchings at Manneken Press in 2008. Each of the three prints in the series are hand-printed from two etched copper plates...
