About the Item

It is certainly the most appropriate translation of Pascale Hémery’s work, which takes a look at the places visited on a daily basis and during her travels abroad. This look is the simplification of lines, materials, spaces, everything that surrounds us that is both anecdotal and deep, if we stop there. The city in particular arouses a real creative excitement by the diversity of its forms but also its ambivalence. Her work aims to reveal its underlying beauty, elusive at first glance. From New York to Naples, from Madrid to Dublin or of course in Paris where she lives, the artist has forged a way of apprehending natural light that she transcribes by a simple play of primary colors. The engraved wood allows the accentuation of contrasts, and the simplification of a composition. It has become her technique par excellence that she develops «with lost wood», destroying with each new color, the previous step. This process of self-destruction of the work does not give right to error and forces a concentration without strolling. Quite the opposite of the spectator’s gaze, forced to get lost in the alleys, roofs and windows lit by an invisible intimacy. In these years when travel is becoming scarce, Pascale Hémery receives a commission from the bibliophile society Les Cent Une. For the 50th artist’s book of this 100% female organization, it is the Rue de Rivoli that serves as the rails for Henri Troyat’s texts. Pascale Hémery admirably takes up the challenge of illustrating with linocuts the poetic journey of the academician, creating herself an architectural and historical journey on all the pages of the book. It is an engraved escape, a motionless journey, but above all a breath of fresh air.
