About

Rachel Burgess' landscapes are explorations of memory and the resonance of nature's forms. She begins her artistic process with plein air paintings and drawings which she completes in her studio, simplifying and abstracting forms from their original composition. The resulting landscapes are evocative and minimal, allowing the viewer to project their own perceptions and experiences onto them.

"After the Rain"is from a series of Burgess' black and white monotypes, which take the vast landscapes seen in her diptychs and simplifies them to compositions of light and shadow. In this artwork, the artist flips the frame of the landscape from the traditional horizontal to vertical. This fresh orientation actually allows the viewer to be more immersed in the artwork, exaggerating the height and scale of the mountains, trees, and surrounding water.

Burgess opts for a grayscale palette which gives "After the Rain" a dreamlike quality. The white of the paper acts as the brightest highlights in the reflective water and sun-soaked clouds. Opaque black islands of trees loom in the middle ground, while misty mountains hover above. The perspective of the monotype allows the viewer to fees as if they're standing on the edge of the water, watching the storm clouds pass over the mountains, revealing the bright white light of the sun.
