Ross Racine
Greenfield Lakes

2008

About the Item

available unframed. 15 3/8"x 20 1/2" edition of 10 The subjects of Ross Racine's works may be interpreted equally as models for planned communities or as aerial views of fictional suburbs. Encouraging a reflective attitude by its distant viewpoint, the aerial view is used here to comment on society's occupation and transformation of nature. Ross Racine is an artist living in Montreal (Quebec), Canada, and New York. Racine's works are drawn freehand on a computer; no photographs are used in the process. These drawings of aerial views use the distant, perpendicular mode of viewing for its reflective capabilities as a way of thinking about design, the city and society in general. His prints have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Canada and Europe, most recently at the Des Moines Art Center, the Künstlerhaus (Vienna, Austria), the International Print Triennial (Katowice, Poland), the Koffler Centre Gallery (Toronto), the International Print Center (New York) and the Front Room Gallery (New York). A selection of Racine's prints has won the biennial prize at the 2011 Biennale internationale de Gravure contemporaine in Liège, Belgium. His work is in several collections, including the New York Public Library Print Collection, the Des Moines Art Center, the Johnson & Johnson collection and the Hallmark collection.

"I am primarily driven by an exploration of colour and form. My objective is to bring an emotional is to bring an emotional element and aesthetic balance to my work." "It came to me in the middle of the night - as these things often do - that to incorporate gold leaf into the finished print would neatly encapsulate some of the elements I am trying to express. Its application would obviously have to be done by hand with all its attendant imperfections and mistakes. Kintsugi - the Japanese art of patching broken ceramics with gold - shares its aesthetic with Wabi Sabi." - Valda Bailey...
