Kuroda's images of cyclists sheltering under umbrellas and speeding along in one direction have become synonymous with urban life in Japan. He has been producing prints on this one theme since the late 1970s and is internationally recognized for these intense images. This is one of his largest prints. It is in very good condition. The very nice frame is silver and black with red undercoat. It goes well with the print, but it does have some paint loss where the red shows through the silver. As well, there is a shallow scratch as well as some slight discoloration on the left bar. It is double matted with a linen outer mat and the mat is in very good condition.Please see pictures. Shigeki Kuroda was born in 1953 in Yokohama in the Kanagawa Prefecture. In 1977 he began studying painting at Tama University of Art in Tokyo and finished with a masters degree in 1979. In 1984 Shigeki Kuroda traveled to the United States where he learned different printmaking methods - etching, drypoint, mezzotint and aquatint. The artist grew up in the midst of a conflict between tradition and the western modernization and industrialization. Against this backdrop, Kuroda deals with the change of the Japanese cultural identity in his works. Kuroda has revitalised the use of intaglio processes through new combinations and modifications. He was born and still lives in Yokohama, was educated at Tama Art University, and has exhibited extensively.
