This print was made from sketches drawn at Underfall Boatard and Pumping Station in Bristol. Underfall is a beautiful boatyard with very striking Victorian industrial architecture - the chimney is very nice, as chimneys go. This print shows a quiet section of the yard, the back of the old pumping station. Although it's a functioning boatyard, it is also a very peaceful place.
Simon Tozer is an award winning printmaker based in Bristol. Simon Tozer's screen prints are constructed images, built up through the layering of translucent colours and through a combination of hand drawn and digital mark making. He is currently working on imagery relating to the sky and sea. The images are a response to the idea of expansiveness: drifting clouds that cross the elemental boundary of land and water, and the reorientation of the sense of self that occurs when, on arriving at the ocean we encounter that vastness of space and the hypnotic attraction of the sea. Simon initially studied painting at Portsmouth, only taking up printmaking later while living in Oxford, where he was the recipient of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies Award for print. He became interested in screen print when completing an MA in Print at Chelsea College of Art in 1990.
